Cities and towns. who use no other light than
wax candles, and no other sweetening than
honey. As there is no cessation in the floral
production, so there is none in the labors of
the “little busy bee." who “improves each
shining hour" all the year round. and does
not, like the lazy bee at the North, go to
sleep in the fall and wake up in the spring.
To show with what facility these two articles
are obtained here, I will mention one in-
stance that came under my observation.
Soon after my arrival here. a waiter in my
hotel placed some fifteen to tWenty wine box-
es around the wall in the rear of the yard,
leaving an opening for the bees to enter.
Having occasion to IeaVe recently, he gath-
ered his Wax and honeya-thirty-two pounds
'of the former and bin gallons of the latter,
which he sold at 30 cents a pound and 50
cents a gallon. The bees came without even
an invitation, and received no care or atten-
tion whatever. Quite a business is done in
this way in the grounds of the old Convents
and among the ruins of the buildings—using
old barrels, boxes, pieces of the hollow palm
and coeoanut trees for their habitations.
Turning from the often-s of this to our own
counuy, it is exceedingly painful to ace the

them human beings, and gIven them facul-
ties little less than the whites. perhaps, when
the advantages are equal, 1 can see no found-
. ation whatever for the arguments rrenerally
used against allowing them the privilege.
To say that they are materially deficient in
capacity for moral, social and intellc clual im-
provement. is per vertinz the truth of history.
Why. at the hotel when I put up there are
~ several members of the National Convention,
and I meet others daily. nrgroes and mulat-
toes.- who speak three and four languaues,
are well read in history. and for general in-
telligence. and urace and dignity of manners
will cornpire favorably with any legislatiVe
bitty in the United States. I have before
expressed my abhorrence of amalgamation,
in your columns. and that I eou‘d neVer view
It otherwise than as a crime and a sin against
Gdd and our nature. But who are the ag-
greas ire? Educate the blacks and they would
feel it to beldegrading to their race to cohabit
wi'h any other, for they have been the vic-
tims. ‘The dictates of a common humanity,
too, ought to move us now to do all we can
consistently to alleviate their condition and
olivine them, for they did not intrude them-
seIVes upon us, but were kidnapped and
brought into the country against their will,
and for the basest of purposes. Retributive
justice has at length tried and punished us
for our complicity and participrtion in the
great crime of African bondage by the four
years of war, with its terrible loss of life and
treasure. and the consequences enteiled upon
us f-rr many years to Come; and how nruch
better it Would be for us now to make a Clean
breirht of It, acknowledge maniully our Last
errors, and show our penitence by striving to
elevate them in the scale of humanity, in-
stead of endeavoring to keep them as near as

remarkable message from the President ad

Personal Liberty and Freedman‘s Bureau
bills in the Senate—and the Speech oi vener-

areas is equal to the days of Win, Webster,

draw out great men, and the speeches of
Shelli-burger. Bingruon, Kelly, Deming, and
now of Mr Stevens, will be read in after
years and declaimed in schools by American

of Mr. Stevens on Thursday was something
more than eloquent—at tithes he rose to a
grandeur of sentiment and purpose which
carried conviction to any listener of the

oiism; and when he came to scan the New
York gentleman‘s closing eulogium upon
dead rebels, and his classifying them with
