GREENSFARMS—A revival of religion is in
progress in the CongregationalSociety, and
nylny converts are being made.
REDDING.—Mr. John H. Lee recently
butchered a nine months old pig weighing
364 pounds.
Barnenron'r.—The net proceeds of the
Promenade Concert recently held at Frank-
lin Hall, in aid of sick and disabled soldiers
and sailors and their families, amounts to up-
wards of Four Hundred dollars.
Edward 'De Martin, son of James DeMar-
tin Esq., died suddenly of heart disease, in
New York, on Wednesday night.
A Machinist named Thomas Johnson, died
suddenly on Monday last, of heart disease.
The Carson the new Horse Railway com
menced running between the Stefling House
and Pembroke Lake, East Bridgeport, on
Monday night. The cars were built in
Bridgeport. A citizen was heard grumbling
about the road, on Monday and said, “it
would drive all trade away from Bridgeport
in lesgthan two years ” A knowing fellow
that. Guess he has travelled.

Mrs. Manion, a young lady livmg in Gras-

marriages and 47 deaths in this town during
1865. '
STAMFORD.—-Tlte community was startled
on Tuesday'morning with the announcement
that the Hun. Chas; Hawley had died sud-
denly during the previous night. Mr. Haw:
ley had taken cold during the severe weather
oflhe 'lajst.tw0 weeks and had ' been ailing,
but no? serious results were apprehended.

ter a noise of strange breathing was heard
and in an instant he was dead. In the dc-
cease of this venerable mail, Stamford has ,
lost one of its Oldest and must respected citi-
zens. Mr. Hawley was a native of Monroe,
in this County, and graduated at Yale Col-
lege with high honor, in 1818. He immedi-
ately turned his attention to the study of the
Chapman at Newtown, and afterwards of
Judges Reeve and Gould at Litchfield, he
laid broad and deep the foundations for that
distinguished professional reputation which
he afterwards acquired. Having been ad-
mitted to the bar he established himself in
the practice of the luwiuthis place in 1816,
and after undergoing the usual probation to
which all youngr men are obliged to submit,
he ultimately obtained a very lucrative prac-
tics, and became among the most eminent
of the lawyers of this county. The school
in which he was educated was a‘ very severe
one, as his competitors were some of the
ablest men that ever stood at any bar in this
country, He possessed an unsually acute
mind, and ill the thorough and elaborate
preparation of his cases he had few equals,
fully identifying himself with his clients, and
faithfully devoting his best faculties to their
. interests.' He Was a man of unspotted recti-
tude, and a devoted supporter of law and or-
der. A patriotic conservgtism constituted a
prominent feature of his character. Mr.
' Hawley has been repeatedly elected to both
-
branches of Legislature, and has filled the
office of Lieut. Governor of the State. His
large estate was acquired by years of close
' attention to his professional duties. He was
a man of fine literary and artistic tastes and
K of strong family affections. He was 73yeara
(flags and leavuf a widow and seven chil-
drum-1W" sons and five daughters—to la-
ment his loss. .
All informal meeting of a number of citi-
zens of Riilgl-ficld, New Canaan and Stam-
ford was held at the Stamford House on
Tuesday alleriioon, to discuss the project of
a new railroad from'Ridgefield to Stamford.

Friday afternoon week by a malicious scamp
who took twenty-two pieces ,of hams from
their books, and placed them upon the fire
