Wesrronn—A barn belonging to the es- tate of Morris Kctchum, was destroyed by fire, on Tuesday morning last,‘togetiler with eight or nine head of fat cattle, grain, hay, &c. The fire is supposed to have caught from the pipe of the Irishman in charge of the cattle, who had just been in the barn smoking. The Loss will probably be all of 84,000) A Drying House attached to Wm. Wood‘s Factory, was destroyed by fire ' on Wednes- day morning last; probably accidental. The Herald says that the Funeral, of Brig. Gen. Henry, Moses Judah, who died at his residence cn Staten Island, Friday last, was to take place in Westport, on Saturday sf- ternoon. _ g ‘ “Gen. Judah was burn in Maryland in 1826 ; entered West Point as acadet in 1839 and graduated as brevet second lieutenant in the Eighth infantry on the 1st of July, 1843. He was transferred to the fourth in- fmtry in 1846, commanding his company at the battle of ElIMolino ds! Rev Mexico, and on the 8th of September, 1847, was breveted first lieutenant tor gallant and meritorious conduct in that engagement. 0n the 13th of the same month he was'breveted captain for gallant conduct at Chapultepec. He was made a brigudier general of volunteers on the 21st of March 1862 and rendered efll— clent service at the West, commanding a division in several battles in Tennessee. At the time of his death he held a commission of major in the Fourth United States infant- ry, and the brevet ranks of lieutenant col- onel and colonel. General Judah com- manded one of the columns of cavalry which pursued, defeated and captured John Metgan in his great raid into Ohio in July, 1868. It was his force which made the forced march from Oak Hall to Centreville, Ohio—nine miles in an hour and a half— .which resulted‘in the interception of Mor- gen e’t Bufington, and his subsequent cap- ture. WxsTON.—-The Congregational Church Society are fond of good singing in Church, and consider it indispensable. They have engaged the services of their old friend Mr C Jennings, who is successfully training a choir of young singers. Their progress is fine, and a grand Concert may be expected about the 1st of April. . A horse belonging to Mr. Jarvis, of Wes- ton, ran away on Wednesday last, throwing Mrs. Jarvis out, and leaving her two chil- dren in the bottom of the sleigh ; one of the children is unable to walk, and only 4 ye are of age. The horse ran nearly two miles, turning three corners at full speed, and came home stopping at his accustomed place no damage was done. , 7 Rev. Z. B. Burr, of the Congregational Church is to have his annual Donation Visit, on Tuesday evening, Jan. 30. We are indebted to Mr. A. S. Jarvis, Town Registrar, for the following abstract of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the town of Weston for the year 1965. There were 16 Births, 6 Marriages and 9 Deaths, of which three were under 1 year of age, one of 14, one of from 20 to 80 years of age, one from 80 to 40 years, one from 60m 70,two from 80 b“ to 90 years of age. ! k » There has been no physician living in Weston for nearly twenty years, which per- haps accounts for the fact that there were but nine deaths in the town last year. Gnmwrcn.—A number of the prominent citizens of Greenwich, held a meeting last week, and organized a joint stock Steamboat Company. It Is proposed to obtain as soon as possible, a‘suitable boat to ply between Greenwich and New York, stopping proba- bly at Port Chester. Sanford Mead, Esq.. was ’ chosen. President pro tem. Wm. R. 'l‘wetd, Esq., of the Americas Club is talked of as the permanent President of thezCompa- uy. New CANAAN.—We hear that the Concert at Armory Hall, last week, for the benefit of the Choir of St. Mark’s Church, was well at- tended, and was a gratifying success. RIDanTmLD.—‘—More heavy pigs; J. We have not learned the result of the exami- nation—Eon GAZETTE] ' The watch and jewelry store of S. H. Smith was broken into on Tuesday morning betwen 1 and 2 o'clock, and robbed of jewelry and other valuables to the amount of nearly three hundred dollars. The rogues cut out a pan- el in the front door, making a hole large enough to pass through and secure their plun- der. After obtaining their booty the rascal 'went to the depot, broke into one of the care where they lighted a fire and assorted the valuables. On Saturday evening the 13th‘inst., about 9 o’clock, afire broke out in the stable and store house of Mr. A. W. Williams at the de- pot. The buildlng and contents being of the most combustible materials, the flames spread rapidly, and although both engines were promptly on the spot, the most they could do was to save the neighboring build- ings from destruction. The building contain- ed a large stock of liquors, which was near- ly all saved, evaluable horse was, however, consumed in the flames. There is every rea- sonto believe that the fire was the work of _ an incendiary. Insurance 88.000 on build- ing and contents. Loss from $8,500 to 84,000. There was a large meeting'st the Congre- gational Church, Sunday evening week in behalf of the Christian Commission and of Freedmen's Aid Society. Addresses were made by Rev. J. Rouse and Rev. Mr. Min- gins, the latter presenting the claims of the Christian Commission, and the former urg- ing the wants of the ireedmen. Acollection 01'2260 was taken up, to be divided equally between the two societies—Advocate. Damn—Messrs Sherlock, Clay and Co. of New York have leased of Benjamin Fitch all his dock property at Ring‘s End, inclu- ding a number of buildings and are now re- ceiving lumber andare putting up addition- al buildings for the purpose of manufactur- ing cotton cloths. They have. already re- ;ceived over two hundred thousandlbs. of cotton, also their engines and boilers for their steam power, . They will commence manufacturing wadding and batting until their other machinery arrives, and suitable buildings are ready for the manufacturing of cotton cloths—Adm“. MURDER AT New MILFORD.—A murder was committed in the store of Messrs.
