FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
WESTPoRT.-The Westport Cornet Band
announce a Hop at Betts’s Hall, on Wednes-
day evening Dec. 27th. Music by the Pun-
zelt Bros. Band.
Frank Burritt, of Saugatuck, shot an Ea-
gle of the Black African Species, on Friday
last, whiCh measured 7 1-2 feet from the tip
of one ’wiug to the tip of the other.
Capt. Samuel Gorham, one of the oldest
citizens of Westport, died on Tuesday last,
aged 79 years. His son George was married
in Easton the same day, and soon after arri-
ving in New York received a telegram an-
nouncing his father’s death. . The funeral
was attended from the Congregational
Church on Sunday last, Rev. Mr. Perry, of
South Norwalk, preaching the sermon.
DANEURY.—-Mr. Ashley of the Jefersont'an
has been paying a visit to the Oil fields of
Pennsylvania.
‘ The town was disgraced by a good deal of
fdrttnkeu rowdyism on Thanksgiving Day.
The ladies of the Christaiu Chapel gave a
Fair last week, at the old Masonic Hall.
The “Young Folks Club” will decrde
whether J efi'. Davis ought to be hung or not,
next Friday evening.
The ladies of the First Congregational So-
ciety hold a Fair at Concert Hall, three days
this week, commencing Wednesday.
The town has been flooded with shows
lately. The “New York Minstrels” lately
collapsed there, and their agent gave his over-
coat as security for their fare outot town.

A young man named John Henry died
on Sunday Week, very suddenly,of heart
disease. He Was a stranger, unmarried, and
a returned soldier.
Mr. Henry Crofut’s horses run away on
Tuesday last, smashing the carriage, and
slightly injuring two ladies. The driver had
both ankles and one wrist sprained.

BRIDGEPORT.—An attempt was made by
burglars, on Wednesday night, to enter the
houseol P. T. Barnum, but was frustrated by
his alarm telegraph.
Miss Dickinson gave her lecture on “ Home
Thrusts,” to a crowded house, on Wednes-
day evening.
A meeting of soldiers who served in the
late we}, was held on Tuesday ‘ evening to
organize a United Service Club for Bridge-
port. Another meeting is to be held soon.
The capital stock of the new, Steamboat
Company is $250,000 and it is all subscribed
for. They are now or have been negotiating
for the Bridgeport for a freight boat and in-
tend to put on as soon as they can, a first
class fast boat for passengers.
NEW FAIRFIELD.—A revival is in progress
in the Methodist Church. Prayer meetings
have been held about two weeks, some ten
or twelve have made profession. and thc’
meetings still continue with unabated inter-
est.

The chairman of the House Commit-
tee on Agriculture, Mr. Bidwell, of Califor-
nia, is one of the largest, if not the largest
farmer in the United States. He owns 26,-
000 acres, a large proportion under cultiva-
tion, 1000 acres in wheat, on which he raised
this year 38,000 bushels.
A correspondent of the Herald who
has been traveling in Mexico with a party
of American oflicers, says they were treated
everywhere with the utmost courtesy, both
by Imperialists and J uarists. He giVCs it as
his opinion that the people of the country
are, by a 'very great majority, in favor of the
republican cause. ,
-—“Wine without grapes” is the latest
French invention. Smart Yankees knew
how to do it years ago. The French “inven-
tor" demands $50, and engages for ten years
secrecy of the buyer into the bargain. A
French writer says that the above named
price is too high, for a man can poison him-
self more cheaply than that; ,we are of his
opinion.
-—-Oue of the blessings of our connection
with Mormondom lies in the fact that our
overland mail route thither costs us $385,000
a year, while the whole postal receipts are
$0,200.
—The State Department has received im-
portant dispatches from Minister Adams, to
the offset that the British government is dis-
posed to submit the Alabama depredations
to arbitration. A private letter also states
that" the queen is decidedly our friend, and
wlll not permit. Earl Russell to take any
course that will cause estrangement between
the two governments.
—-—A western farmer who wished to invest
the accumulation of his industry in United
States securities, went to Jay Cooke’s office
to procure the treasury notes. The clerk in-
quired what denomination he would have
themin. Having never heard that word
used excepting to distinguish the religious
sects, he, after a little deliberation, replied
“Well, you may give the part in Old School
Presbyterian to please the old lady, but give
me the heft on’t in Free-will Baptist.”
—Cars are being built in New York for a
street railroad in Calcutta.
—Corbett, the English captain who was
indicted for a breach of the neautrality laws
in enlisting men for service upon the Shen-
doah, has been acquitted, as was expected.
