NEWS ITEMS.
——The President in his interview with
Henry Ward Beecher, on Wednesday, is
said to have been very frank in his state-
ment of purpose and convictions. He de-
clared that no State lately in rebellion ought
to be permitted to resume its former status
and position in the Union till it shall have
adopted the Constitutional Amendment, and
provide to extend protection to the freed-
men.
-—A significant announcement is made in
Washington dispatches, to the efiect that the
War Department has ordered a ptop to be
put to the sales of all manner of armyztrans-
portatio’n materiel. Though large quanti-
ties of this necessary adjunct of military
movements have already been disposed of
. since the termination of the ;rebellion, there
is still a considerable supply remaining in
the possession of the government for which
it would appear General Grant and the Sec-
retary think we may have use. ‘
—There are 115 Baptist churches, '36 hav-
ing pastors in Connecticut. The whole num-
ber of members amount to 17,490; number
added during the year, 698. Contributions
.- gig missionary and kindred purposes, $10,-
—-The Litchfield Enquirer publishes the
names of: 136 persons, residing in that town,
all of whom are over ’70 years of age. FOur
-of the number are over 90 years.
—The great Cincinnati bridge about to be
suspended across the Ohio river, will be the
longest in the world, being 'over 200 feet
longer than that over the Niagara river and
therefore 540 feet longer than than the me-
nia bridge in England, its total span will be
1,057 feet. The massive stone piers tower
110 feet above the floor of the bridge, and
200 feet above their foundations. One year
is the period allowed for building it.
——-There is talk of creating the rank of
General for Grant, Sherman to be promoted
to be Lieut. General and Thomas and Sheri-
dan-brevet-Lieut. Generals.
—The Secretery of State announces to
the Secretary of the Navy that the Brit-
ish Government has removed the restrictions
hiteerto imposed upon American naval ves-
sels visiting her ports, and that the usual
hospitality is therefore, to be extended to
British war-ships in the ports of the United
States.
-—-—A bride of sixty, who had been married
but six days to a youth of sixty-four, com-
mitted suicide (by laudanum) at her home in
Stamford, England, a couple of ,weeks since.
A letter was found containing the diseased’s
wedding ring and some words of farewell to
her friends, in which she said that she was
broken-hearted, and could not endure to live
any longer. The jury at the inquest found
that she" poisoned herself While in an un-
sound state of mind. .
——Colonel W. B. Gaw, commanding post' i
at Chattanooga, together with Colonel But-
terfleld, Rev. T. J. Van Horne post chaplain,
and other gentlemen; with a working party
of two hundred soldiers, have gone to the
battlefield of Chickamauga. Their object
is to have the bodies of the Union soldiers
killed in thatbattle and buried there, disin-
terred,.placed in coffins and transferred to
the National Cemetery at Chattanooga.
——Williameiucent Wallace, the composer
died of an attack of congestion of the lungs,
superadded to_his other illnesses, on the 12th
of October at the Chateau de Bagen, Hautc
Garonne, where he had gone for his health,
——The Hayticn rebellion is ended. Cape
\ Haytien has surrendered to President Geff-
rard, and peace is restored. ‘
'—A Boston paper announces that one
thousand cooks, one thousand girls to do
general housework, five hundred girls to do
chamberwork, two hundred nursery maids.
