How to Pick‘ Huckleberries.
When I first knew Mr. John Horsley, he
a as an old white~haired man, and very rich.
As he seemed never to have been in any
great business, such as merchants and specu-
lélors now engage in, and. he was never ac-
cused of being a di'shonestman,it was always
a mystery to me how he becamesorlch. I
knew that his father was . a. poor country
clergyman, and that John could havereceiv-
ed no property from him. Meeting my
friend one day, when our conversation hap-
pened to turn on the subject “of gathering
property, I ventured to. ask ihunl how it was
that he had been so successful in life. :
“When I was a boy" he said, “my father
was a poor minister. We lived very
plain, and dressed very plain, but that
never troubled us. We always had enough
of something to eat, and my mother was. one
who could contrive to have her children
dressed neatly, if not richly. .One' day, when
I was a littleffelIlow, several slushy: and
girls came along on their way .topIick Chuck-
lonerries. They invited motogd'wlitlivthem
and when I saw their bright faces and their
little baskets, and the brightrgiteraooa,‘ I
wanted to go. So. I- gwent into the

“Only- to Johnson’s hill, sir.”

ing; better picking, and thus they will spend
half of the afternoon in roaming from one
place to another. NOW, my advice to you is,
when you find pr'ottgfdz'r picking, mew that
spot and keep picking them. Your basket at
fight will show whether my . advice is good
or not. ’ . .
Well sir,I followed my father‘s advice,and
though the children would wonder about

here you can fill your basket in less than
no'time,” yet I stuck to my “fair picking
.lace." When we got through at night, to
e astonishment of every one, and my own

as many berries as anypther one. They all
wondered how it was, but .I knew. And
that was the lesson that'made me a rich man
Whenever I have found ‘fair picking,’I have
stuck to it. . Others, . have. changed- .occupa-

I attribute my successes to Lille lesson by

I have recalled this conversation and the

be an incurable disease by every one, phys-

in medicine—especially such cases as were
reducedto the condition I was in. This in-
duced many people to believe my recovery
only temporary. I now prepared and gave
the medicine to censUmptives forsome time,
andflmade many wonderful cures; and the
demand increased .so , rapidly, that I deter-
mined to char themto the public,.and devote
my=undividedi attention to lung diseases. In
truth, I Was next to forced to .I it, for people
would send for meFfar and near, to ascertain
