1111; LINCOLN AND THE FLAG. -—0n the
22d of February, 1861, Mr. Lincoln was in
Philadelphia, on his way .to Washington.
He accepted an invitation to misc the na-
tional flag over Independence Hall. In a
brief address he alluded to “that sentiment
in the Declaration of Independence, which
gave liberty, not only to the (people of this
country, but hope to the worl for all future
time.” He then said:
“Now my friends, can this country be
saved on that basis? If it can, I will consid~
er myself one of the happiest men in the
world, if I can help to save it. If it cannot
be saved on that basis it will be truly awful.
But if this country cannot be saved without
giving up that principle, I would rather be
assassinated on this spot than surrender it. ”‘

mation declaring all southern ports, except
those of Texas, open to foreign commerce
alter the first of July next; and withdraws
from this date all pretense of belligerent
rights. from blockade-runners to the excluded
ports, who will hereafter be treated as pirates.
He also removes all trade restrictions upon
inlandh trade east of the Mississippi.
he N. Y. Hérald, alludes to the propo-
sition to pay off the national debt by subscrip-
tions of one hundred and fifty thousand
shares of $20, 000 each, and offers to contrib-
ute two sharés, or $40, 000. and expects to
make money by it. The Herald says the As-
tors, would take twenty shares probably, and
asks for a committee to solicit subs'criptiOns.

name their race- horses alter the famous bat-
tle-fields of our civil war. Among the names
of favorites We find those of Chattanooga,
Richmond and Antietam.

was the largest animal ever exhibited on this

and his weight was ascertained to be 15,000

and 46 gallons of water per. day... He was

Samuel Cunard, the founder of the
Cunard line’ of ocean stIeamcrs, died‘ in Lon-

My lungs and liver put on a new action,

from my lungs as much as a pint of yellow

expectoration of matter subsided, the fever

from eating too much; with this return of
health, I gained in strength, and now am
