In the summer of 1864, Prof. Silliman ex-
amined this locality, and in a letter dated at
Buenaventura, Santa Barbara 00., July 2,
1864, he thus communicates the results of
his observations upon the proper! now
owner‘. by the California Petroleum ‘Ompa-
ny, the purchase of which he strongly rec-
ommended to his friends in New York:
(eighteen thousand) acres in one body, on
which are at present at least twenty natural
Oil wells. some of them of the largest size.
Artesian wells will be fruitful along a double
line ofthirtecn miles, say for at. least twen-
ty-five miles in linear extent. The Ranch
is on an old Spanish grant of tour leagues of
land, lately confirmed, and of perfect title.
It has, as I said, about eigthecn thousand
acres in it ofthe finest land. water ed by four
rivers, and measuring, in a right line, in all,
near thirteen miles. As a raucli,itis a splen-
did estate;
But its value is its almost
fabulous wealth in the best
of oil.”
In a letter written to the Company since
his return. (Feb. 10. 1865, he says:
“I am happy to be able to inform, at this
date, what I have said in my published re-
port respecting the extraordinary character
and high value of the estate on which your
Company is established.”
