Presnled in the Second M E. church, Nor-
walk, February 26, 1865. .
The Standing Committee again come be-
fore the' Society they serve, their friends and
the friends of the Bible, to report the doings
of the year. While we and you have been
‘ ‘busy here and there‘hhe months have flown,
the year has passed, and we must submit
our Fifth Annual Report. Remembered
mercies should make us grateful, and the
flying moments earnest.
THE SOCIETY’s ExTENT is the same as last
year; the towns of Darien, Wilton, Westport
and Greensfarms and a part of N orwalk.
OUR RELATION To THE AM. BIBLE SOCIE—
TY has been maintained with credit. We
cannot, we are confident, honor this relation
too much. If we would be efficient and
useful we must be careful of our reputation,
prompt in our dealings with, and faithful in
our reports to the Society in whose name we
live. Our motto should be—“ Not one of our
many sister aurz‘lz'arzbs shall out do us." Let
us help not hinder the accumulating work of
our worthy parent.
ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY IN WAR TIME.—
We have passed another year Of civil war.
The end, however, is not yet. The war
cloud, black with sorrow and heavy with
suflering still hangs over us, but our eyes
are turned and waiting to discover upon its
frowning face the cheering brow of Peace.
Even now; ”clear-eyed Faith beholds its
brightening hues rising simultaneously
from the yielding South and the chastened
North and joining its inseperable arch of per-
petual union, by the strength and beauty of
universal Freedom and the keystone of
Truth divine. May this year of our Lord
'witness this glorious consummation. Swift
as has been the march of our national dest-
iny, it has not outstripped Christianity’s
angels of mercy. Numerousas have been
the campaigns of our vast armies, not one
has been forgotten—not one overlooked, by
generous Christian Benevolence. The char-
lty which suiferctli long and is kind, has hur
ried with heart of love and hand of plenty,
to the dreaded front, where the blood-capt
waves of surging battle strike, and bodies of
men, slain and shattered, are piled like ship
wrecks on a rocky shore. She has welcomed
true to her unselfish spirit,the fugitive flying
from’bdfidavem'ith garments 'for his naked-
ness, food _Or his Starling body, instruction
empty mind, and wdrds for his spiritual
cheer for his trusting soul. Nor has she
spurned the plea for breadpvhich outstretch-
ed hands half washed from treason’s work,
and pleading lips not clean from treasou’s
words, have uttered. Many are the institu-
tions through which Charity has spoken on
the tented fields, on moving fleets, in damp
trenches, in hospital wards and prison inclo-
sures. We do not disparage any of the hun-
dred arms by which she has labored, nor
any of the hundred-voices by which she has
spoken; :and yet we claim for the Amer-
ican Bible Society, an honored place‘ and a
worthy record as the ready and tireless dis-
penser of Charity’s gifts. It is this Institu-
tion which is hanging Heaven’s own light in
the low dark shelter tent of the soldier, is
speaking by its Book of books words of
sweet promise by the unattended cot of our
martyrs for Freedom‘s cause,and is spreading
outits sacred pages of saving instruction to
counsel the err-ing and comfort the suffering.
DOES OUR-SOCIETY PAY ?—-Is it expedient-
so sustain this local agency? What is its ad-
vantage ? A few facts are the best answer.
The Society’s expense for four years is $125
25. $200 have been paid for col por-
tage, more than a 1000 families visited, and
more than a 1000 Bibles and Testaments
put in circulation. The receipts for four
years are $1274.85.
THE WORK OF THE PAST YEAR—The por-
tion of Norwalk belonging to the Society has
been canvassed, and with the following re-
sults. NO. of families in the district 995. Of
these 820 are Protestant, and 175 are Roman
Catholic. 1 Catholic family accepted a Bi-
ble. Only three Protestant families were
found destitute. Thc Committee will se-
cure the canvass of Wilton or Westport the
coming year. At their meeting in January
they resolved to hold a semi-annual Bible
Society Meeting in the adjoining towns.
ABSTRACT OF TIIE TREASURER’S REPORT.
—-Thc receipts of the year are $388.88. The .
expenses of the Society are $32.00. Dona-
tions to the Parent Society amount to $290.

THE DEPOSITORY is kept open and is well
supplied with the various styles ot Bibles
and Testaments. Andrew Selleck Esq. is
the Depository Agent. The stock on hand,
the property of the Society, was inventoried
J an. 16, 1865, at $205.27. .
LIFE MEMBERS—The number is 17. Their

Once more the Committee refer the inter-
ests of the Society to its individual friends
and the churches connected with it, “ The
Word of the Lord is right; it is tried; it ell-
dureth forever." A truthful, valuable,clmngc-
less Bible is in our hands. It has made us
what we are, our homes what they are, our
country what it is. Spread it their and make
the world what it ought to be. Bible truths
like leaves from the tree of life are for the
healing of the nations.

The Annual Meeting was held in the 2d
M. E. Church, Sabbath evening, Feb. 26,
1865. A large audience was in attendance.
Addresses were made by Rev. H. Beebe,
Agent oftheAm. Bible Society, Rev. J. E.
Pierce, of the Auburn Theo. Seminary, and
Rev. S. H. Smith, Pastor of the Church.
On motion the Constitution was so amend
ed as to allow Life Members to hold office
in the Society though they be not members
of the Standing COIIIIDIILCC,tllItI the Standing
Committee the unrestricted privilege of
naming the time as well as the place of
holding the Annual Meeting.

—In some remarks on hop raising, made
before the New York Farmer’s Club, it is
stated that a field of six acres trained upon
wires, was all killed by a single flash Of
lightening. ' *
Orders were received from Gen. Fry
on the 81h inst. to commence the draft in
New York city oh Wednesday, the 15th inst.
About 13,00, names have to be drawn.
Al the United States district‘court in
New Haven on Wednesday, Chas. Bossuet,
was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment and
fined $500 for enticing a soldier to desert.
