The Great Democratic Idea.
" The great Democratic idea of State
rights" is the stereotyped expression of
copperhead conventions and copperhead
'orators. It was incorporated in the res-
olutions adopted at Middletowu on
Wednesday, and C. C. Barr and Wm.
W. Eaton made it the key note of their
political songs. Let us look at it briefly
.aud see .what is meant by the“Democrat-
ic idea."
More than thirty years ago the peo-
ple of the-State of South Carolina, under
the 'lead of John C. Calhoun, proposed}
to revolutionize the government because;
of their objections to the tariff. They .
claimed power to act as they pleased on
the ground of State rights. Andrew
JacksOn, the President of the United
States, a firm and decided old Democrat,
' cted, and threatened to hang John
C: alboun “as high as Hamau” unless
he desisted. The prompt action of the
old hero nipped the secession plot in the
bud, and from that day to the present the
name of Jackson has been honored by
men of all parties who have "loved the
. ‘a ,_ American Union. Calhoun and his asso-
‘ , _ ciates were properly styled nullifiers. and
. .A ..none have been louder in denunciation of
their conduct, than leading statesmen of
_ the Democratic party.
'Andrew Jackson followed the ‘ Dem-
-~ ’ocratic idea,” as did George Washing-
.ton when the whiskey rebellion in ’98
' ‘ threatened war on the soil of Pennsylva-
- .nia.‘
Therights of the States are clearly
defined, and only fanatics—men who have
bélied‘ the Constitution of the United
States—have dared to question the pow-
ers granted. Even the leaders of the
present rebellion, when starting out in
their unholy work, did not attempt to
' jhstify themselves by the plain writings
of. the Constitution ; but with a broad
stretch of imagination claimed secession
as one of the “resermd rights” of the
States not mentioned in this Constitution.
The right of local government ; the right
of fostering such institutions as the
people saw fit ; the right of defining
certain crimes and fixing punishments
therefor, etc., etc., were conceded
to . the States, and in the exercise of
all powers thus granted the people of no
one State were responsible to the people
of the other States. In this the States
were sovereign, but the Constitution of
each State was made subject to the Con-
etilalt'on of the United States, and here
sovereignty was checked.
Admitting such rights as the States
enjoyed, was not a " Dem0cratic idea ;”
it was an American idea on which the
great principle of self-government was es-
tablished;
'The""Democratic idea” so loudly pro-
claimed by the Burr Eaton demagogues
has no relation whatever to the history
of the Democratic party when it followed
the teachings of Jefferson, Jackson, and
other illustrious men. It is a new idea—-
amodern invention urged and advocated
and practically illustrated by Jefferson
Davis and the Richmond government.
The leading ideal-in the minds of the
honored statesmen in the Democratic
ranks, from Jefferson to Douglas, was
the indivisibilily and perpetuity of the
union of of these States. The sham idea
which is called "great” by lllcnposlles of
peace in the Middlcfown resolutions, ls
Democratic only so far as it originated
under the administrations of Franklin
Pierce and James Buchanan, and is in
direct hostility to the teachings of the
wisest statesmen Of all parties since the
formation of the Republic It is a pro-
siavery idea ; it calls secession and revo-
lution, State rights; it denounces loyal
efforts to maintain. the authority of the
government “covert attempts” to estab-
lish a despotism; it styles the war for
the nations life “an infamous waste of
blood” and a. “pestilent abolition cru-
sade”; and it. has not one word to utter
against the’ great conspiracy of the South
or against the wicked men who have
deluged the land with blood. .
- It. is a libel over the graves ofthe best
men the Democratic party has produced
to name this a “Demo"cratic idea.” ”Let
us call it by its right name—the name
which history will give it and which pos-
terity will clothe with infamy “l‘he Cop-
perhead Idea,” born in treason and nor-
tured while battle-fields were crimsoned
with the blood of patriots.
