In the winter Of 1854—5. Dr J. W. POLAND, then
of Gofi‘stown Centre, N. H. compounded a small
quantity of medicine for a member of his family,
who was afilicted with a disagreeable irritation of
the throat. Kuowin that the White Pine Bark
was useful in cases 0 infiamatiou, he made that the
BASIS of his article. It was necessary to combine
the Dark with other ingredients to modify its action
as an astringent. Of course it was .AN EXPERI-
M It would not injure—It might do good.
The result was most surprisin . A permanent cure
was effected within a week, an there has been no
return of the difficulty for NINE YEARS, though it
was of ion standing.
A secon small quantit was prepared for a lady
who had a bad cough, an had raised some blood,
and she was cured of it. Two or three other indi-
viduals made a trial of it,and experienced a wonder-
ful cure in throat difficulties. But With these flatter-
ing results, not a thought was entertained of ever
putting it on sale, till several months had elapsed.
