Particulars of the late raid by
Gen Birney.

On the morning of the 26th of April,
Gen Birney with six companies of the
35th U S. C. T., left Jacksonville in the
army transport Mary Benton, followed
from Pieolata by three companies of the
1571b N. Y. Y, under command of Lieut.
Col. Carmichael, on board the Harriet
A. Weed. Arriving ofi' Pilatka, recent-
ly evacuated by the Union forces, the
Rebel pickets were seen to run precipi-
tately. The force landed at a point

' called Welacca, about 75 miles above
Jacksonville, on the east side of the St.
J ohn's River.
of the 75th Ohio, a mounted regiment,
had been ordered with a portion of his
command. He was detached to St. Au-
gustine, and thence by the upper St. An-
gustiue road into Volusia County. Gen
Birney, with his infantry, followed to
support the mounted force. A portion
of the Pub Connecticut, under Col. No-
ble, also marched 1n the immediate rear
of the 75th Ohio, from St. Augustine,
over the lower road, and in their pro-
gress captured an outpost of the enemy
near Volnsia, making prisoners of the
Rebels there stationed. Unionists were
not interfered with on the march, but

the portiible property of all avowed Reb-
els was confiscated, and a large amount
of cattle,2 horses, vehicles, &c., retained
fer the U. S Quartermaster’s department.

The Rebel partisan ranger Dickerson (or
Dickinson), with 400 of his native Flori~
da cavalry, rode as far as Fort Gates
and crossed part of his force; but. on
learning the various positions and the
strength of our raiding forces, he pru-

dently withdrew his men from the east
side of the river, and betook himself west-

 

 

wardly with all convenient dispatch—I

The forces having combined, penetrated
as far as Smyrna, on the east mask of
Florida, and seized two schooner: laden
with cotton, prepared to run the block-
ade. Here also, was captured a large
amount of cotton stored for shipment.—
The 8th U. S. C. T. had been detailed
to guard the fords cf the St. John’s Riv
er, in the rear of the expedition; and the
whole force, without the loss or hurt of a
man, regained Jacksonville on the 6th of
May. During these nine or ten days the
captures of the Unionforces amounted to
5,000 to 6,000 cattle, a large number of
horses, males, and other means of trans-
portation, and more than a million do].

These expected nothing less than to be
immediately shot or hanged ; the convic-
tion having been sedulously implanted in
their ignorant souls that the Yankees
always massacred prisoners of war. Up-
on'beiug with diflicnlty assured that they
had nothing worse than captivity to fear,
they gradually realized that their term
of furlough was indefinitely extended,
and expressed themselves pleased with
the prospect of relief from military ser-
vice. The wife of one of these I'urlonghed

way, piteously begging for the release of
