TOR gives us the advantage of cog-wheels,
without allowing them to clash or ride
eachother. Without cog-wheels the whole
strain of forcing the cloth through the ma-
chine is put upon the lower roll and the
cloth is made to act in the place of cog-
wheels to drivethe upper roll, causing three
times the strain upon the lower roll as when
cog wheels with our patent regulator are
used, besides saving the extra strain upon
the cloth. Experience shows that Clothes-
Wringers without Cog-Wheels cannot be

THE UNITED STATES;
Messrs. HARPER do BROTHERS com-
menced the regular issue of the numbers of
this important NATIONAL WORK, to the
Literary and Artistic preparations for which _
many months of labor have been devoted.
These are now so far advanced, that the pub-
lishers are warranted in promising that this
work will be a thorough, careful impartial
History of the War; based upon a laborious
collection and comparison of all accesssible
materials.
Numbers 1 2 and 3 are now printed; 4 will
be ready in a short time. These four num-
bu's are a fair specimen of the character and
execution of the whole work. Succeeding
Numbers are such a state of forwardness
that the publishers will be able to issue them
re ularly and rap‘idly.

The Work will be issued in Numbers, as
rapidly as is consistent with thorough and
careful preparation. The Publishers hope
to be able to issue two numbers each month.
Each number will contain 24 pages of
the size of Harper’s Weekly profusely illus-
trated, and printed in the best manner, from
large and legible type.
