Sm z—Having heard and read much about
the opinions of the Army on the Presiden’t
Proclamation of Freedom, I have made in-
quiry as to the views Of the eleven regiments
composing Gen. Abererombie’s Division, to
which I am attached. First, as to the Gen-
eral himself. He is so good a soldier that
he expresses few opinions, but will obey all
orders. Of the eleven regiments, ten are
largely, indeed almost unanimously, in favor
of the Proclamation. As to the remaing one,
I have not been able to inquire. The offi-
cers are heartily with the President upon his
great edict, believing it to be a positive force
in the prosecution of the war equal to a levy
of many men. ‘
For one, I feel that into the conflict God’s
inspiration has now entered. and that allex-
penditure of money and loss of life will be.
recompensed by the great good that shall
come to Humanity from this fearful struggle.
When the war was simply for the preserva-
tion of the Union and of the liberty of the
White, dominant race, we were ready to sac-
rifice our home enjoyments and life for its
successful prosecution. But, now that the
conflict has assumed the grander shape, and,
in order to secure the Union and our White
liberty, we are compelled at last to be just to
the Negro, we feel that we fight for God and
Universal Humanity as well as for ourselves.
Each hospital bed and battle-field thus be-
comes sanctified, and in such a cause suffer-
ing is crowned as martyrdom.
Knowing that you will pardon my letter in
your wish to hear how the Army receives
the Proclamation.

11th, 16th, and 21st, now all brigaded togeth-
er under 001. Harland, of the 8th. The
14th is on Bolivar Heights, near Harper’s
Ferry. The 20th is near by, at the foot of
Maryland Heights.

W The Winsted Herald gives a list of
men said to be named, more or less fre-
quently, in connection with the nomination
for Congress in the 4th Congressional Dis-
trict. The names are Gen. 0. S. Ferry, Ex-
Gov. Holley, George W. Peet, Doct. Gold,
A. B. Mygatt, William Cothren, Gideon H.
Hollister, John H. Hubbard, Abijah Catiin,
Elliott Beardsley, Gideon Hall, Rev. Hiram
Eddy, Hiram Goodwin, Bobbins Battell,
William K. Peck, and Ex-Congressman W.
W. Welch. The Herald proposes to add to
or withdraw from the list, as may be desired.

WThe removal of Gen. Buell from his
command in Kentucky and giving it to Gen.
Rosecrans meets with general satisfaction,
and is hailed as an evidence that slow move-
ments are no longer to be tolerated in the ar-
my. The late movements of Gen. Buell, if
one half the reports are true, are disgraceful,
and ought to lead to something more than
his simple removal from command. It is
very singular that while the North are de-
nouncing Buell, the South are equally severe
on Bragg. TheRichmond papers continue
to denounce him as having made a complete
failure of his campaign.

WMI. Ralph H. Avery, of Wampsville.
N. Y., is the ownes of a very sagacious old
mare, which he has driven to church regu-
larly for the past twolve years. Last Sab~
bath (Sept. 21,) he lefther at home to graze
' beside the highway, and went to church With-
out her. The church is about three-fourths
Of a mile from the house. As the horse was
feeding, the church bell rung. She was
seen‘to raise her head and for a moment lis-
ten, and then start for the church. She_went
directly there, and around to the stall 1n the
churcn shed where she was in the habit_ of
being put during church hours. On being
turned out of the stall she‘ went out and
around to the block steps where she was
used to receiving her carriage load for home,
,and Ethen left.

E'The banks at Charleston have six or
seven million dollars of counterfeit Confeder-
ate notes on hand, which they received as
good. There are said to be from $70,000,000
to 80,000,000 of such trash in circulation in
the Confederacy. The Treasury Department
at Richmond sent about a quarter of 9. mil-
lion Of dollars of this counterfeit money to
Charleston to pay troops with.

can have for some years, for they will be dis-
tributed in no other way.
As the plants must be grown from the very
small Stock of seedling plants on hand when
we made the purchase, and as over half a
million will be required, We do not expect
to be able to commence the distribution be-
fore September, 1863. As amatter ofcourse,
the recipients will only be those who pay to
us one year’s subscription, and the plants will.
be sent out in the order subscriptions are re-
ceived. the three plants will be sent to each
person who sends to us a year’s subscription
for either the Daily, Semi-Weekly, or Week-
