written after the conquest of that city, head-
ed “Who lives in Memphis,” thus describes
in a cheerful manner the present inhabitants
of Memphis: “Then who lives in Memphis?
It’s civilians. We use the word in contradis-
tinction to politician as to soldier. The men
with whom the duties and inclinations of do-
mesticity have rendered business, home, and
pursuits of literature or art, paramount to the
more boisterous attraction of military distinc-
tion—men, clvilian in taste as in occupation
form now the population of Memphis.”

A Compliment Returned.
AMethodist chaplain, now in New Orleans
narrates how that, “from the time Com. Far-
raguvturned the city over to Gen. Butler, the
rabble had been singing, in derision, the old
son of ‘Picayune Butler.’ Soon after we
me. e fast, the General came on board and
our band taking up the strain, played for
some minutes. and with a will, the same
‘Picayune Butler!’ This was ‘the unkindest
cut‘ot all. Our boys cheered lustily, and we
expected an out break, but the taunted rebels
saw our nine-inch columbiads and twenty-
four pound howitzers, three of the former
and six of the latter, looking them in,the face
ready to ‘speak,’ and they bit their lips and
concluded to stand it.”

they may be the arbltcrs of the fate of nations
in the old and new worlds. This is not avow-
ed in speeches, but it is the truth.
