as follows Col. Donnelly, commanding the
1st Brigade, 1st Division, Ranks Department

"l have the honor to report as follows con-
cerning the late battlciat Winchester. on Stin-
day, May 25th, in which this regiment was
engaged.
About 5 o‘clock Sunday morning, as the
men were rising from their sleep, and heating
their coffee in the field which we entered
late the night before, a shell suddenly fell
amongst them. This was followed by others
in rapid succession. The men quickly seized
their niuskets and fell into line, as calmly as
if on parade. The enquiry was then sent
back whether we should hold the spot or
advance. Before receiving a reply, I ordtred
the regiment to a hollow in the field next in
the rear, which was done by the right of
companies to the rear, in good order. The
enemy’s infantry soon appeared on the hill
in front, charging direcdy upon ‘15. Com-
panies A and F immediately moved forward
beyond the fence and and delivered their fire
with effect upon the enemy,now within a few
rods. The whole battalion then moved up
to the line, and delivering their well directed
vollies mowed down the enemy by scores—
shooting away their flag each time. At the
third volley, Companies I and B, by half
wheeling to the right, delivered a cross fire.
At this the enemy broke and 1am in confusion
The order then came for the regiment to fall
back to a line of stone wall, in the rear of the
field next behind. Dining this movement
Company D Were deployed as skirmishers to
hold the line we were leaving. A fog then
settled down, and for an hour firing ceased.
As it lighted, I saw at some distance a large
force of the enemy moving down by the
right flank to turn our left. Our skirmishei's
fired upon them, but the movement remained
unchecked till a few shells from our artillery
forced them back. After this their infantry
paid but little attention to us, but their artil-
lery on the right and left poured a heavy
shower of shells about us as we lay behind
the wall. About 9 o‘clock, my regiment be-
ing in advance of the other two of the brig-
ade,=1 ordered it back to their line, and while
dressingr the rank received the order to re-
treat. Company D having been called in,
the retreat commenced in close files, at quick
march, through the streets on the eastern
side of the city, under a heavy fire of artil-
lery in the rear, and frequent shots from the
citizens and even women inZIhe houses. After
leaving the city the regiment fell into the
column of the brigade, and by a forced march
of forty-three miles through by roads, reach-
ed the Potomac at 11 P. M. The last man of
the regiment crossed at Dunn’s Ferry, seven
miles below Williamsporr,.Md., at 1:20 A. M.
Monday afternoon we moved by canal boats
to Williamsport, where we now lic iii cainD
—four hundred and thirty-three men—sub-
ject to your order. During the fight and re-
treat, both officers and men acted calmly and
readily. Where all have done exactly as
ordered, it seems invidious to discriminate.
Still I desire to especially notice the gallant
conduct of Capt. Betts, (whom I learn to be
seriously wounded), Capt. Lane and Lieut.
Dutton, Acting Regimental Quartermaster,
ieut Rice, (since missing), and Adjutant
lake, also rendered me efficient service in
the field. .
WA later report from Adjutant Blake of
the Fifth Regiment, says 17 more of the mis-
sing men have come in, reducing the whole
loss in killed, wounded and missing to about
70.
