Rebel Ba-rburity—An Atroeious
Case.
The people ot‘Watcrtown, Plymouth and
Waterbury, who knew Mr. Bishop, the sub- .
ject‘ of this paragraph, will read \vltlrieelmgs
of no ordinary indignation the article up-
pended, which gives an account of the min-
mous manner in which he was entrapped for
entertaining Union sentiments at the break-
ing out of the rebellion in Virginia, where he
resided. In despite of his gray hairs, he was
taken from his bed at midnight, hurried on
to Richmond like a felon, imprisoned, and
only released after months of deprivation
and suffering; then re-arrcsted and thrown
into prison, which ultimately became his
tomb. This is but a solitary specimen of
hundreds of similar instances that we have
read within the last year—but this touches
on near home. We knew Mr. BishopWell—
he was one of our staunch subscribers—and
often called upon us to talk over the news.
He wasa very intelligent, plain-hearted man,
highly respected, and was at one time one of
the most prominent men in Plymouth. He
reared also a respectable family, and one of
his sons now resides in Plymouth. We want
the “ white feather” gentry, and the conserva-
tives par excellence, who are scared at the
mere shadow of Abolition, to read this ac-
count, and see how it squares with that hu-
manity practised where freedom reigns tri-
umphant, and the barbarism of slavery is
unknown. May the black curse be swept
from the earth. Here is the article alluded
to, taken from the Washington Star of the
9th inst:
THE CASE OF LEVERITT BISHOP.
EDITOR STAR :—There was a notice in
£01“ columns, a few days since, of a Mr.
ishop, who was taken prisoner in Fairfax
‘county, last September. Perhaps it will not
be uninteresting to add that Leveritt Bishop
was a native of Connecticut, formerly in
good circumstances, but having met with re-
verses, came three years ago and settled in
Fairfax county. Va. He was nearly seventy-
five years of age. A short time before the bat-
tle of Bull Run, his son, who was with him,
Was obliged to take refuge in flight or join the
Confederates. Mr. Bishop, thinking they
wjould not molest a man of his years, stayed
totake charge of the property. In Septem-
ber, a number of soldiers came at midnight,
representin themselves as Union officers
with news Irom his children in this city.—

clothing, without giving him a. trial, dragged
him on to Richmond.
Some time in December he was tried and
discharged, had reached Warrenton on his
way home, when he was re-arrested and
thrown into jail, where—worn out with pri-
vation and want, hope at an end—he died, a
stranger in a strange land.
Thus miserably has perished the best of
fathers, he whom his children idolized; and
they have not even the consolation of know-
ing where his body rests.
And such as Dr. Day, now confined in the
Old Capitol has done this. My father’s
blood is on his hands, and the blood of oth-
ers; and Union mothers, whose Union sons
have been forced into the rebel army, are
heaping curses on his head; and every nion
man in that vicinity lay at his door the chief
cause of all their persecutions. God grant
that the ghostly faces of the deadthat he has
stripped, and the groans of the dying whom
he has tormented and insulted on the battle-
