TO OUR FRIENDS

Hitherto, we have never offered any one a
premium for helping to extend the circulation
of THE TRIBUNE. We have printed the
cheapest newspaper, considering the outlay
by which it is produced, that was ever issued
in any country, selling it for little more than
the cost of the white paper; have employed
no agents to canvass for subscribers, and have
allowed no compensation (beyond a copy of
our paper) to any of the thousands of gener-
ous friends who have annually taken care
that the number of copies of our several
lashes-circulated in their respective neighbor-
hoods should be at least maintained and if
possible increased. We have been sparing
even of verbal thanks to these friends, but
have none the less realized the fullness of our
obligation for their earnest, unselfislnpains-
taking persistent efforts.

We propose for the prasent. season only—
in view of the hardness of the times, and the
fact that we are enabled to buy white paper
somewhat cheaper than we have hitherto
done, or can hope to do after the close of the
War—to make some small acknowledgement
——not. so much a recompense as a slight testi-
monial—to those friends who shall see fit to
exert themselves to obtain subscriptions
(whether ori inal or renewals to our Weekly
and Semi- eekly editions. We do not
know that we could offer anything of similar
value more generally acceptable and useful
than a Gold Pen of the best quality and
finish. We propose, therefore, to forward to
each person who, during the two months
ensuing, shall send us subscriptions and pay-

The House is situated at the mouth of the
river Thames, on Long Island Sound, two
miles from New London, Conn.,and is with-
in six hours ride of New York and Boston.
It is aceessiblc from New York by the mag-
nificent steamers City of Boston, City of
New York, Commonwealth and Plymouth
Rock, which leave New York at 5 p. 111., and
by three daily trains of cars, via New Ha-
vcn ; and from Boston by railroad via Wor-
cester and Norwich, or by Shore Line via
Providence and Stoninglon. Fine Omnibus
scs will bt'in attendance to convey passen-
gers, with their baggage, from the depot lo
the House, running hourly between New
Steam boats from N or-
wich, Mystic, Stoniugton, Greenport, Sag
Harbor and Hartford, land at u wharf a. few
rods from the House. -
