I had a newer scape from the soony South.
“The swings and arrers of outrajus fortin,"
alluded to by Hamlick, warn’t nothin in
comparison to my trubles. I came pesky
near swearin some profane oaths morc’n
onct, but I hope I didn’t do it, for I’ve prom-
ist her, whose name shall beZDamelcss, (ex-
cept that her initials is Betsy J.) that I’ll jiue
the meetin House at Baldinsville, jest as soon
as I can scrape money enufl‘ together so Ican
’ford to be piuss in good stile, like my welthy
naburs. But if I’m cenfisticated agin I’m
fraid I shall contiuner on in my present be-
nitcd state for sum time.
I figgered conspicyusly in many thrillin
scenes, and on scvril occasions I thought the -
grate komic paper would never be enriched
no more with my lubucrations. After biddin
adoo to Jefferson D., I started for the depot.
I saw a nigger sittin on a fence a-playing on
abanjo. “My Afrikin Brother,” said I, co-
ting from a Track I onct red, “you belong
to a very interestin race. Your marsters
are goin to war cxcloosively on your ac—
count.”
“Yes, boss," he rcplide, “an’ I wish ’em
honorable graves l” and he went on playin
the banjo, larfin all over, and openin his
mouth wide enough to drive in an old fash-
ioned 2 wheeled chase.
The train of cars in which I was to trust
my wallerable life was the scaliest, rickytiest
looking lot Of consarns that ever I saw on
Wheels afore. “What time does this string
of secondhand coffins leave ‘2” I inquired of
the depot master. He sed direckly, and I
went in and sot down. I hadn’t more’n fair-
ly squatted afore a dark lookin man with a
swinistcr expression onto his countenance
entered the cars, and looking very sharp at
me, axed what was my principles.
“Secesh,” I answered. “I’m a dissoluter.
I’m in favor of J efi'. Davis, Bouregard, Pick-
ens, Capt. Kidd, Bloobeard. Munro Edwards,
the devil, Mrs. Cunningham, and all the rest
of them.”
“You’re in favor of the war ‘3”
“Certingly. By all means. I’m in favor
of this war, and also of the next war. Ive
been in favor of the next war for over six-
teen years!”
“War to the knife,” said the man.
“Blud, Eargo, blud l" sed I, tho them
words isn’t original with me. Them words
was rit by Shakspeare, who is ded. His
Mafitle fell onto the author of “The Seven
Sisters,” who’s goin to have a Spring over-
coat madc out of it.
We got under way at larst. an’ proceeded
on our jemey at the ' rate of speed which is
observed by properly conducted funerel pro-
cessions. A handsum young gal, with a red
musketer bar on the back of her head, and
a sassy little black hat'tipt over her forrered,
sot in the scat With me. She wore a little
Secesh flag pinned onto her hat, and she was
a. gain for to see her true love, who had jincd
the Southern army, all so bold and gay.—
80 she told me. She was chilly and I offer-
ed her my blanket,
“Father livin ?” I axed.
“Yes, Sir."
“Got any uncles ?”
“A heap. Uncle Thomas is dcd, tho. ”
“Peace to Uncle Thomas’s ashes, and suc-
cess to him! I will be your Uncle Thomas!
, Lean on me, my pretty Seceshcr, and linger
in blissful repose !” She slept as secoorly as
in her own houscn, and didn’t disturb the
sollum stillness of the night with ’ary snore.
At the first station a troop of Sojers en-
tered the cars and inquired if “Old Wax
Works 1” was on bored. That was the dis-
respectivc stile in which they referred to me.
“Becawz if Old Wax Works is on bored,”
sez a man with a face like a double-bl'cstcd
lobster, “we‘re going to hang Old Wax
“forks !”
“My illustrious and patriotic bummcrs
sez I, a gittin up and takin orf my Sllappoo,
if you aludc to A. Ward, it’s Iny pleasin
dooty to inform you that he’s (led. He saw
the errcr of his ways at 15 minits parst 2
yesterday, and stabbed llissclf With a stuffed
sledstake, dyin in five beautiful tabloos to
slow music! His larst words was: “My
perfesh‘ernal career is over ! I jcl-k no
morel’b
“And who be you ?”
“I’m fa stoodent ill Senator Bcnjamius
law-offiss. I‘m goin up North to steal sum
silver spoons and things for the Suthcrn Ar-
my."
This was satisfactry and the intossicsacd
troopers went orf. At the next station‘ the
pretty little Seccsller awoke and said she
must get out there. I bid her a kind adoo,
and giv her sum pcrvisions. “Accept my
blessin and this hunk of gingerbread l" I sed.
She thankt me muchly and tript galy away.
There’s Considerable human natur in a man,
and I’m afraid I shall allers give aid and
comfort to the enemy if he cumsiu the shape
of a nice young gal.
At the next station I didn’t. get out so.easy.
1 was dragged out of the cars and rolled ill
phi: mud for severil minits for the purpuss of
“takin the conseet out of me," as a Secesher
kindly, stated. . '

put his nose into my mouth. I returned the

The crowd. sed it was high old sport, but I
couldn’t zactly see where the lafture comes
when I got the upper hand of my antagger-
nist and threw him into the ravcen. He fell
about forty feet, striking a grindstone pretty
hard. I understand he was injured. I.
haven’t heard from the grindstone. ‘
A man in a eocked but come up and scd

was a mistake. The crowd had taken me
for another man. I told him not to mention
it, axed if his wife and little ones was 50’s
to be about, and got on bored the train,which
had stopped at that station “20 minits for
refreshments." I got all I wantid. It was
the heartiest meal I ever ct.
I was rid on a mic the next day, a bunch
of blaziu fire crackers bein tied to my coat
tales. It was a fine spectyca‘. in a dramatic
pint of view, but I didn’t enjoy it. I had
other adventers of a startliu kind, but why
continner? Why lacerate the Public Boo-
zum with these here things? Sufi'ysit it to
say I got across Mason & Dixic’s line safe
at last. I made tracks for my humsted, but
she with whom i’m harnist for life failed to
recognize, in the emasliiatcd bein who stood
before her, the gusllin youth of forty—six
summers who had left her only a few months
before. But I went into the pantry and
brought out a certain black bottle. Raisin
it to my lips, I sod, “Here’s to you, old gal l"
I did it so natral that she knowcd me at
once. “Those form ! Them voice! That

cried, and rushed into my ’ arms. It was
too much for her, do she fell into a swoon. I
came very near sw ounding myself.

Goddess of Liberty out of her present bad
