Correspondence of the Gazette.
It is a. fact which cannot be ignored that
actual and open war now exists between tins
government and a. section of the country,
known as Confederate States. These Con-
federate States have been making war upon
the government of the United States for the
last six months. While the loyal people of
the North were entertaininn‘ and discussing
various compromises, the Southern rebels
were laying the trains by which they expect-
ed to become the possessors of the Capitol,
and to be recognized thereby as the govern-
ment dcfacto. * Virginia, while she pretended
to be in favor of some compromise being
adopted by the last Congress—while she
claimed to be an arbiter between the govern-
ment and those who were seeking to over-
throw it, at the same time was manufactu-
ring cannon, shot and shell, and sending
them to Charleston to be used for the reduc-
tion of Fort Sumter.
War exists, and the question now for the
government and the people who are loyal to
it,is how shall it be brou ht to the speedlest
possible termination. here must be no
half-way measures, no particular regard must
be paid to the interests of those now arrayed
in hostility to the Union and the Constitutlon
--the shortest wars are the most merciful.—
In every one of the rebellious states the fires
of sex-vile insurrection will sooner or later
blaze forth; they will be nothing but the nat-
ural consequences of the mad acts of rebels
and traitors. The bloodiest butcheries on
record have been committed by Negro slaves
—-witness the slave insurrection of San Do-
mingo—when once insurrection commences
among Southern slaves,it will be as impossi-
ble for the South alone to restrain it, as to
stop the fire which sweeps over the. mighty
prairie. Let not the Government as It values
its continued existence, as it values the fu-
ture peace and prosperity of the country, as
it values the interests of freedom and human-
ity, as it expects the approval of posterity,
interfere in any manner, in any State now_ln
open rebellion against it, to perpetuate an In-
stitution which has been the cause of all our
present troubles, until they shall lay down
the arms of their rebellion and penitentially
invoke the strong arm of that Government
for their protection, which is ever due to loy-
al citizens.
We are now drinking of the cup appointed
for us, and the prophecies of some of our
most eminent statesmen are being fulfilled.
Thomas Jefferson said, “ I tremble for my
country, when I remember that God is just,
and punishes the sins of nations, as well as
those of individuals.” We must be prepared
to consider this war not as one wherein the
advantages and the victories are to be all on
' one side ; the Southern rebels will fight des-
. perately. They are brave, and ' owmg to
their longer preparations may galn at first a
temporary advantage. .
Let us be prepared to make every sacrliicc
now in behalf of our country. At the be-
inning of this call for troops Massachusetts
stood forward armed from top to‘toe. Let
us see to it that Connecticut, although slow,
will yet show as well a drilled. and equipped
militia as any State in the Unlon. Let com-
‘ panics be formed in every town In the State,
and let the legislature now In sessmn see to
it that they be armed with the most approved
weapons—some of the States have dis-
patched agents to Europe to procure arms—
let Connecticut do the same If necessary.
The most efficient weapon in the hands of a
soldier is the Minie rifle with the sword bay-
onets of the French Zouaves which did such
terrible execution at Solferino and Magenta;
with them the use of the bayonet is as much
a. science as the use of the sword. While
many of the sons of Connecticut are Inarchl-
ing in defense of the flag of the country, at
those who remain at home be active also—
there are many ways by which the cause of
our country can be aided. Let the women
of Connecticut imitate the glorious example
of the women of New York—let the farmers
of Connecticut, if they would serve their
country and themselves at the same timesce
to it that they plant more acres this sprang than
ever before, and they will reap a mob pipfit
