CONVENTION To DIvIDF. THE STATE.
A dispatch from \‘Vheeling states that only
slight rebel demonstrations have Occurred
along the Baltimore and Ohio railroad.—
Fivc thousand Virginians are at. Harper’s
Ferry. Representatives of the Union senti-
timent in Brooks, Hancock and Marshal
counties were at Wheeling Monday, to learn
what action the Unionmen propose and to
concert measures of self-defense. No special
action was taken, but a convention of the
western counties will soon be called, to con-
sxder the propriety of a division of the state
The Union feeling is strong in Morgantown
and Monongahela counties. Wheeling was
quiet Monday.

Missouri to be forced cut.
. Gov. Jackson has called an extra session
ofthe. Missouri Legislature on the 2nd of
May, to organize and equip the militia, and
to raise money to place the State in an atti-
tude of defense; and Gen. Hough has order-
ed the militia into‘enoampment on the 3d of
May for six da s—nll which means a bold
stroke to take Iissouri out of the Union by
a coup do main.

Maine.
The legislature of Maine will adjourn
Thursday morning. It has passed an act .to
raise ten regiments of volunteers, appropria-
ting $10,000,000; an act to prowde for a
coast guard, and approptlafimg $300,000 an
act making the entire militia of the State
available by draft; a resolve authorizing a
loan for $1,300,000 ; and an act authorizing
the supplement of females as nurses in the
army. Six thousand men will he enlisted by
Saturday. The free use of railroads and
steamboats is being generally ofl‘ered. Cities
and towns are voting money by thousands
of dollars to equip soldiers and provide for
their families.

General Scott’s Patriotism.
A letter from Washington says General
Scott was thoroughly aroused at the reports
spread at the South concerning his resigna-
tion, and took occasion to say to a group of
gentlemen, several of whom were officers,
and who had pointed out to him the report:
“Sirs, I have served half a century under that
beautiful flag, and though I have the fullest
confidence in you and your patriotism, I can
more easily believe that you would trample
that flag in the dust than that I should
ever be sus ected of resignation at this hour
of trial. 0, Sirs; please God, I will fight
for man years yet for this Union, and that,
too, un er the protecting folds of the Star
Spangled Banner."

WSmith Brown, a sailor belonging in
Stamford, fell into the hands of a- Hvigilance

Eastville, N. 0., recently, and was fined $200
and sentenced to the jail for six month—his

Hefinally escaped after thirty seven days
imprisonment, and may threats and insults.

Hon. C. H. Van Wyck.
During the delivery of his speech in Wash-
ington, in March, 1860, Reuben Davis asked
the Hon. C. H. Van Wyck “if he would go
out Of the District of Columbia to test the
courage of a Southern man if“ Mr. Van
Wyck firmly and instantly replied, “I travel
econ/where without fear of any one." He has
since done so, and proposes to do so again.—
He enlisted as a private in a company at
New burgh, but goes On in advance. He in-
tends to sleep in Washington this week, or
wet the soil of Maryland with his blood. Let
every patriot follow his example, and our
