Free Press relates the following,. for the
truth of which it 'vouches:
“An ox-team attached to. a lumber-sled,
grained young man and a buxom girl of
along Lamed street yesterday, and halted
in front. of " J usttce Purdy’s office. The con-
ple dismounted and entered the office, where
they made known their wishes, and request-
tant bridegroom said he had come to town
with a load of produce for his employer, who
owned the team, and as Susan wanted to buy
a kaliker dress, he had brought her along on
the top of the bags. On the way in they had .
talked the matter over, and in view of the
had done considerable courtin’ on the sly,
concluded to get married. They declared
themselves of age, and took the bonds for
better or for worse.
The bridegroom was very much elated
and kissed the bride an unreasonable num-
ber of times. Then he requested the court
to kiss her, and even went so far as to inti-
mate that all respectable persons among the
spectators might enjoy thc same privilege.—
Hc was especially elate on the newspaper
question. “Put ’er in," he said, in a reckless
manner. “Put ’er in the papers, and make
Susan’s name all capitals. I’ll pay for big
letters. What’s the use of getting married
to a putty gal unless you can get it in the
papers 1’”, In the midst of this jubilation the
thought of the old man struck him, and he
sobered down as though a shower-bath had
fallen on his head. “Come, Susan,” he said,
taking her hand.“let’s go home and see it.

drew a deep sigh and switched up the cattle,
whose slow gait seemed all too fast for his
palpitating hopes and fears.”

Conn FOB Dames—There is a fa-
mous prescription inuse in England, says
1716 Springfield Republican, for the cure of
drunkenness, by which thousands are said to
have been assisted in recovering themselves.
The recipe came into notoriety through the
efforts of John Vine Hall, father of the Rev.
Newman Hall, and Capt. Vine Hall, com-
mander of the Great Eastern steamship. He
had fallen to such habitual drunkenness that
his most earnest efforts to reclaim himself
proved unavailing. At length he sought the
advice of an eminent physician,who gave him
a prescription which he followed faithfully
for seven months, and at the end of that time
had lost all desire for liquors, although he
had been .for many years led captive by a
most debasing appetite. The recipe, which
he afterward published, and by which so
many other drunkards havebeen assisted to
reform, is as tolloWs. “Sulphate of iron, 5
grains; magnesia, 10 grains; peppermint wa-
ter, 11 drachms; spirit of nutmeg, 1 drachm;
twice a da .” This preparation acts as a tonic
and stimu ant, and so partially supplies the
place of the accustomed liquor, and prevents
that absolute ph sical and moral prostration
that follow a sut den breaking off from the
use of stimulating drinks. In cases where the
appetite for liquors is not too strong the med-
use of liquors at first with the medicine, di-
able to throw away his bottle and glass alto-
gether, after which he continued to take the
medicine a month or me, till he felt that he
was wholly restored to self-control,and could
rejoice in a sound mind in a sound body.

Remarkable Pact.
' The day after Christmas last, a lady in this
city became mother to a fine and healthy
tact nor calculated to excite comment. As
usual, mother and child did well, and pro
grossed in health and stren th. But two
weeks afterward the same ady was again
the mothei of a child, a. fine boy,who is also
flourishin , as well as the doubly taxed
mother. his circumstance, although of ex-
treme rarity, being pipbably the second well
ascertained case of the kind in the United
' States is one which is knowu to medical men
'as having occurred before, and is accounted
for upon clearly ascertained physical grounds.
