“And what of Lennora Hicks—what isher
talent ?” .
“I do not know that she has any that is
‘very conspicuous; but then she is an admira-
ble girl—you know that she is worth eighty
thousand dollars.” ' _

slightly discomfited his sister. “And Mary

“I should not think anyone need ask con-
cerning her. She is a splendid creature; the
most beautiful girl, that Iever saw. I always
want her at my sociablcs for the sake of em-
bellishingthem. Did you ever know a hand-

would as willingly marry a stone image as
Mary Wilson. She looks like apiece of fine-
ly chiseled marble and possesses about as
much life and animation as a polished block.
Little May Burling ismuch more to my taste.”
“Why, Clarence, no one ever considered
May Burling pretty. She was a nice little
thing; but what of that? SO are a hundred
others; but one cannot visit them all. May
has neither beauty, wealth, nor accomplish-
ments. She cannot draw, she cannot write,
she cannot—; in fact is a‘ perfect Abbody.
Just then a servant with a card from a visi-
tor, entered and interrupted the tete a fete
between the brother and sister.
Clarence Milford had been absent from his
home for the space of four years; and return-
ed to find the changes that are usually
wrought within so long a period of time; his
friends were scattered—“some to . the bridal,
some to the tomb.” His sister, who had left
a young, lighthearted school girl, had “gone
nto society” and boasted that the circle con-
ained none but the gifted. She was a girl
of good natural endowments, had been well
educated, and was still pursuing various stud-
ies with so much order, and such total
neglect of all feminine employment, that her
I dropped her long
' brother thought he. fast congealing into an
intellectual iceberg.
About a month after the above conversa—
tion, Miss Isabella Milford was taken serious—
ly.ill; a neglected cola led to fever; and for
eleven long weeks the young lady could not
leave her pillow. At first her fricn ds were ass-
iduous inexpressingtheir regret,and in making
enquiries after her health, &c., &c., but none
came to lay~asde their bonnefs, and to set
beside the suffering girl, to smooth her pil-
low, or' to cadence the tones of their gay
voices to suit the weak, aching head. And
the physicians soonforbade the admission of
morning callers. _ . . .
Poor Bell! How she longed for a mother,
or a sister, or some friend who Was not fash-
ionable; or was not taken up with her music
her painting, or, writing, that she could not
find time to pay a little attention to the sick !
And their stole a strange yearning into her
heart for her cast off friend May Burling.
One day a note was handed into her room
written in a pretty delicate hand. Bell was
too ill to open it so her brother broke the seal
and read it.
“DEAR BELL :—I heard, the other day, that
you were very sick; too ill to leave your
room; I cannot tell you how sorry it made
me feel; it'set me thinking of the time, Bell
when we were so dear to one another; when
we were like sisters; and I long to come
right to you and forget there has been any
estrangement. I know not how you may be
situated, but I think it must be very hard to
be real sick and have no mother to nurse you.
If you need me, Bell, or even if you do not,
but are alone, please let me come in just as
Your old schoolmate,
, _, MAY BURLING.”
In reply to this,Clarcnce wrote with Bella’s
consent:
“MIss BURLING :—.-My sister being too ill
to address you, desrres Inc to say that she
would be much pleased to receive you. She is
entirely alone with the servant and myself.
With much gratitude for your kind thought
fulnesss.
I am very respectfully,
CLARENCE MILFORD.”
A few hours brought May to Isabel’s bed-
side where her capabilities of nursing were
fully tried, and well they stood the test. So
cheerful, quick and quiet, her presence was
the sunshine,as bright yet noiseless; she knew
of so many little soothing ways to while away
the pain, of so many little tempting dishes
which her owu hands would prepare 'to re-
fresh the invalid. Then, when her patient
was convalescent, what a fund'of amusement
could she afford! She could interest her by
the hour—sometimes by reading aloud, or by
telling s ome droll anecdote, or pathetic nar-
rative, by going through some intricate games
and puzzles, played by herself and little
brother.
But Bell ivas finally almost well and
no longer needed her fair nurse. May must
go home, for that little brother missed her
sadly, and her mother could no longer spare
her. And Bell parted with her as reluctant-
ly as if May could play the piano OI write
poetry. When Bell was fully restored to
health, notwithstanding these deficiencies in
May, she was present at all her companies,
and invariably did much to enliven them.
At the expiration of a year, Mr. Clarence
Milford informed his sister, one morning, that
as she considered it below the dignity of
anintellectual young lady to mend gloves
and to sew on shirt buttons, he should pro-

Vv'$"mvide himself with that very necessary article
—a wife. Presently, finding that he was sc-
rious in his intentions, she proffered her asis-
tance, in the selection, which he at once de'
clincd,‘ saying that his choice had not only
been made, but that he had already gained
the consent of the young lady.
A shade rested on his sister’s face, for she
thought in her heart how dear a sister would
May Burling make; but it was too late now
to tell of the hopes she entertained, so she
only inquired the name in a disappointed
tone.
“Oh, you will not like her, I know, replied
herbrother.’ You could not call herhand-
some; she is not rich ; she cannot draw or
paint; she never writes, in short she is a per-.
feet nobody.” . '
“Why, Clarence.”
It is the truth, but she has a woman’s
highest birthright—a pure, true, loving
heart. She is skilled, too, in those sciences
in which no woman should be deficient viz :,
house keeping and care of the sick; and shef
is earnest in her mission to make homeE
the most enchanting and blessed spot om
earth. Sha is sweet tempered and compan-‘i‘
ionable, and has the art of ‘on Lima.

shine; she never-dazzles, yet she never fails

Tears were. in Isabella’s eyes but not of
sorrow; did she. ever have cause to regret
that she owned her for a sister, and her
brother for his wife, one. whom, in her igno-
rance and fhougldlcssncss, she had styled in
contempt—nobody? And in the light of
M ay’s loveliness, through the influence of her
daily walk in charity and in purity, Bell
learned to esteem character higher than intel-
lect, and principles above talent, and cultiva-
tion of the heart, the proper exercise and de-
velopment of its powers, to any outward at—
tamment.

Allen Betts ; east by Allen Betts and High-

way; and west by heirs of Silas Hayes, dc-

Real Estate to be sold. and to empower her
or some other meet person to sell the same,
pursuant. to the Statute in such case made
