pondent of the New York Herald, Senator
Lane gives much dissatisfaction to his politi- ,
ical friends there by addressing public assem-
blages on political affairs. They have deter-
mined on the advice of Mr. Breckiuridge’ to
ridicule the stumping tour of Douglas and
J ohnsonas undignified, and in order to pre—
serve their consistency, desire that their cau-
didates shall remain at home_ and keep si—
lent. Mr. Breckinridge has written to Gen.
Lane, urging this course upon him, and' we
believe his advice and the urgency of his
friends has compelled the General to cease
his addresses, in which he attempts “to de-
fend Breckinridge and your humble servant”
(to use his own words) from the charge of
disunionism !

TEE SLAYER STORM-KINGse—A correspon-
dent of the N. Y. Times, writing from St.
Paul De Loando, Africa, Aug. 13, speaks of
the capture of the Storm King at the month
of the Congo with 609 slaves on board. He
adds:
This vessel sailed from new York last
April, and the captain of her—LOckhart by
name—made no hesitation in informing the
oflicers OI the Sun J acinto that he had bribed
the deputy marshal with $1,000 to let him
depart from Sandy Hook. The Storm King
has gone to Monrovia to land her black freight
and from thence, with her prisoners, to the
United States.” _ . '
The deputy referred to is Theodore Ryn-
ders, brother of Marshal Rynders. He has
since become insane.

mittee not a word is said about Abolition Re-
publicanism, but the document applies liber-
ally such terms as “bolters,” “sectionalists’”
“secessionists,’.’ “disunionists,” “disorgani-
zors,’_’ &c., to those in this State who have
done all in their power to save the vote of
Connecticut from bein cast for the sectional
rail splitter Lincolu.— armer.

islature by the Breckiuridge democracy, took
a ward republican meetingbyagreeable sur-
prise, the other night, by coming in and an-
nouncing the reasons why he should sIIp—_
port Lincoln and the entire ticket.

Mr. Seward on the Missouri Border.
There has been nothing more remarkable
and gratifying in Mr. Seward’s western tour
than the reception he metwith in the border
towns of Missouri. He spoke at St. J oscph’s
and Chillicothe and was invited to speak at
Weston. ' He could not have appeared in
either Of these towns three years ago without
a nearly absolute certainty of losing his life.
Mr. Seward remarked that twenty years ago
he would not have been allowed in his own
town of Auburn to make the speech he made
at St. Joseph, Missouri. Among the‘crowd
of 2,500 or more at St. Joseph there was no
word of disapprobation, and Mr. Seward nev-
er stated the “irrepressible conflict” more
strongly. He concluded his speech in this
admirable manner:
“I will dwell for one moment on this ex- '
traordinarg _scene, full of assurance on many
points, an Interqtmg to every one Of you as
it is to me. It teaches that there is no differ-
ence whatever in the constitution, nature or
character of the people of the several States
of this Unionhpr ofthe several sections of
this Union. hey are all of one nature, birth,
and educated in the same sentiments. A1 tho’
many of them came from distant lands, still
the very fact of being American citizens is
sufficient to make them all alike. I'will tell
you wh this is so. ‘ The reason is simply
tins :- he Democratic principle that every
man ought to be the owner ofthe soil that he
cultivates, and the owner of the limbs and the
head that he applies to that culture, has been
adopted in some states earlier than in oth-
ers; and where it was adopted earliest it has
worked out the fruits of higher advancement.

On his way down the Missouri by steamer
from Atchison tmLeavcnworth, crowds were
collected at the various landing places, anx-
ious to see Mr. Seward, and he was heartily
cheered. At Weston, which was the head-
quarters of the rutiians during the civil wars,
there were loud calls for Mr. Seward, who
appeared on the hurricane deck and bowed
to the crowd, when quite a little scene oc-
curred, as reported in the New York Her-
ald :—
“Mr- Seward said, ‘Gentlemen, what is
your pleasure?’ ‘We want to see you,’ cried
the spokesman of the crowd. ‘Wcll, gentle-
men, I am very glad to see you, and hope you
are all very well.’ ‘Wheu do you speak at.
Leavenworth, Mr. Seward ?’ cried another
person. ‘I don’t speak there at all,’ replied
the Senator. ‘1 can only speak in Kansas
once, and it has been arranged that that shall
be at Lawrence on Wednesday- ‘Could you
not call on your way back and let us hear
you?’ ‘I am afraid not, and, besides,’ said
he laughingly, ‘I would have to bring a body
guard to go ashore with Inc.’ ‘TIIIIt will not
be necessary,’ struck in a fine, athletic fellow
‘we’ll take care ofyou. I’m a Bell and Ev-
erett man myself, but we should all like to
hear what you have to say. Can’t you call
