NEW YORK IN 1856 AND 1860.
The following are some of the most import-
. ant changes that have taken place in New
: York politics since 1856: -
Mr. E. R. J ewett, publisher of the Buffalo
Commercial, President of the Fillmore State
' Committee, and chief manager of the Fill-
more campaign in 1856, and till very recently
member of Mr. Crittendcn’s National Union
Committee, now supports Lincoln, with all
the influence of the Commercial, which has
ever been an able advocate of Whig and
American principles.
The Ben. N. S. Benton, appointed Canal
Auditor by the American State officers in
1856, an earnest supporter of Fillmore, and
the American can idate 1for Controller in
'1857 nows'u rts Linoo ii.
’ The Hon. aggrge K. Babcock, of Buffalo,
late StateSenator, a leading Old Line Whi
31nd American, a close personal friend an
supporter of Fillmore, is stumping Western
New York in support of

The Hon. Daniel Ullmann, the American
candidate for Governor in 1854, supporter of
.Fillmore in 1856, now supports Lincoln.
Gen. G. A. Scroggs, PreSident of the Amer-
ican State Council, candidate for Lieut.
Governor, on the American ticket with Ull-
man in 1854, a supporter ofFillmore in 1856,
dele te to the. Convention that nominated
Bell and Everett, dele te to the late State
Convention at which but, Door and Brooks
proclaimed the Douglas coalition, now sup-
ports Lincoln. . . _
Goldsmith Denniston, late an American
member of the Legislature and American
candidate for Canal Commissioner ni_1857, a
warm su porter of Fillmore in 1856, now
'supports‘Lincoln. . _ . ' _

joined extract from a Speech he delivered at
New Orleans after his rc-election to the Sen-
ate in 1858: .
“I, in cOnnection with the Democracy of
Illinois, acce t the deciSIon of the Supreme
'Court in the red Scott case_as authoritative
exposition of the Constitution. Whatever
limits the Constitution, as e. ounded by the
Courts, imposes upon the a thorities of a
Territorial Legislature, we cheerfully recog-
nize and respect. In, conformity With that
decision, slaves are recogmzed as property,
and placed on an equal footing With other
property. Hence, the owners of. slaves, the
'same as of any other species of property,
have the right to remove to the Territories
and carry his property With him.

—-Col. Forney says of the Breckenridge dis-
'unionists. that “they had almost committed
suicide when they were rescued from that
fate by the friendly hand of the masses of
Kentucky and Missouri, who hate put (hem to
death in adcmwé of the scofibld waiting for
them in Nooembe-r next.
-—Senator Ben Wade was talking at Cleve-
land when a voice in the crowd cried out,
“How about Douglas?” The Senator pro-
ceeded: “There is no Douglas. I deny the
fact. [Laughton] I once tried to . coax a
bound to the woods, by dropping pieces of
bread and butter before him. He followed
till the food was gone, and then quietly trot-
ted back to the house. So it is with Doug-
las; his ‘men’ will trot after him till his bread
and butter are gone, and then trot after some
other hound.”

The London Critic, in the course of a long
review of the speeches of Hon. Abraham
Lincoln, the Republican candidate for the
Presidency ofthe American Union,tlius refers

“It is from the speeches which Mr. Lincoln
ias from time to time delivered in opppsition
:0 Mr. Douglas, that We gather some idea of
his mental qualifications. We collect from
.he speeches of Mr. Lincoln, that he has a
nind rather of the straight-forward than of
.he subtle order; that be rather seizes upon
great and prominent facts and argues them

and fragile theories upon the treacherous

more than passionate, and commanding more
