war of Christian extermination in Syria raged
with redoubled j urv. A recapitulatiou made
up to the date of July lst, showed that 151
villages had been burned and pillagcd by the

Miss Amelia C. Temple, a missionary in
Syria, writes to herfather in Worcester, Mass
under date of June 23, an account of the
massacre at Deirel Kamar, from which we
make this extract: ‘ '
Toward dawn on Wednesday morning, a
work of slaughter commeced, at which my
heart. stands Still asI write of it. From
house to house the ruffians passed. From
boys at the age of ten years, to the tottering
old man of eighty, not one escaped. In many
houses, two, three, four and five fell before
the destroying sword. Around and around
the,blood-thirsty gangs roamed, hunting in, ;
every nook and corner, in cells and in walls,
in stables and on the house-tops, till not a
'man was left to bury the slain. There they
still lie, rendering the place a resort for vul-
~tures, and an uninhabitable place for men.—
Womcn, crazed by their fears, the sights and
their losses,ruslied frantically around—house-
less, homeless—for the fire was made to con-
sume what it could lick up with its ten thou-
sand tongues.
The population of Dcir is—was 7000. Two
thousand five hundred men are said to have
perished. It had been better for the women
if they, too had shared the fate of their hus-
bands. Many fled to the government troops
stationed in the midst of the city. These,.to
the number of two. or three hundred, were
standing without the gate, which had been
barred against them, begging for admission.
‘Druse swords and hatchets made desperately
short work with them, Those who had ta-
ken refuge within, were one by one thrown
out of the windows, to meet the fate from
which they had fled. Only two houses are
left standing, Rev. Mr. Bird’s and the dwel-
ling of one of the governor’s departments.—
Mr. Bird went up yesterday to bring awa
some goods. It wfll be long before he can wit;
safety to his health go again. Some few peo-
ple escaped. to the seaboard. The English
magnanimously sent down the steamers yes.-
terday to brin them up and refugees fl'om
.Hasbeiga and idon. Both, arrived toward
midnight last night, bringing one thousand
passengers, mostly women and children.'—-‘-
Mr. Ford’s family also came from Sidon.—‘-'
The French men-of-war offered their boatsto
help them land thesepoor refugees. They
have no clothing, no money,.no homes, and
almost no hopes. - '

This eloquent gentleman, whom Mr. Bu-
chanan sent to Kansas as Secretary, and af
terwards made him acting" Governor, and
then turninghirn out, because he would not
sanction and assist the Leeompton fraud, is
out for Lincoln, though he has been a Demo-
crat all his life. In a speech made at St.
Louis, Mo., the other day, he states his posi-
tion in the following terms. . The honest be-
lievers in Popular Sovereignty will do well
to give heed to his reasoning: . » .
“You areall aware thatin company with
~ Governor Walker and myself there were
others who sustained us throughout, and
known generally as Anti-Leeompton Demo—
crats, led on by Douglas. .1 liaven’t-an un-
kindword against him, but I shall. not vote
for him. I admire him to some 'extent‘for the

erei nty to be cerrect, but not as embodied in
the ansas-Ncbraska Bill, because the people
of Kansas had no chance to assert their ma-
jority. Douglas sustained them for- a while;
but he has fallen from it. Had he. sustained
that position, I would not now be advocating
Lincoln and Hamlin for the Presidency—'-
Douglas has not maintained his position to
the end. After the Democratic party had
