A Romantic Story.

A gentleman of this city, who has, been
many years engaged in the prosecution of
military claims, fell in accidentally With a
case. ill‘ which both a mall and his wife receiv—
ed pcnsionslfor;revolutionary services. The
singularity of the circumstances struck him
so forcibly that he instituted and elicued from
an old lady, the sole surviving dcccndant the
following facts. (“76 state them substantial-
l y, but our informant not being present, it is
possibly that we may be incorrect in some
insignificant particulars.) _

Early-in the Revolutionary war, a man
named Lane (we think) enlisted in a company
raised in the neighborhood of Manchester, to
serve three years. He went, with his regi
nient to the‘ north, and there joined Washing-
ton’s army. Takin“ :part in all the previous
battles; h‘e Wassev' rely wounded at Brand) -
wine 'or' 1Ge'rm‘antown; and during the batL
tle, and after,“ was taken care of by a: brother
soldierngo whom‘he had become greatly at-,

Through tlii'siisiege, Lane and his friend

duty bravely; *At last, Lane’s comrade was;

in the ’ai'n‘ls’ of his devoted friend. W hat .
must. havé‘been the amazement of Lane, . on
discovering't'hat the brave comrade who had
so long fought by his side, and had nursed
him soitenderly when he was wounded,
through the tie ort of the attending surgeon,
was a woman. It appears that she had acci-

dcntally" fallen in with him somewhere, and
had formed a strong attachment to him. At
the same "time, from some cause or other, she
had made solittle impression upon him, that
he did not recognize her in the lcastwhen‘he
afterward met her disguised‘as a soldier. She
was in despair when ~ Lane enlisted, and,
under the ,influence of that feeling, she fled
from her parent-3’" home, donned the Conti-
neiital uniform, hand followed him to the
wars. 'Wh'at followed, was a proper finale to
such a romance. The wounded woman re-
covered,"and‘as soon as the. twain were re-
leased freni captivity, they became one.—
Theylivcd many years happily together, and
left several Children. . .

Incidents of this nature—disguised damsels
following their lovers to the wars in the ca
paeity o'f pages—were great favorites With all
the .old romance writers. The readers of
Shakspere will recollect that one his plays
turns upon something of the same sort.—
-Ievcrthcless, we feel assured that the tule
we have recorded is true in' all its essential
particulars. At any rate, both the man and
his wife received pensions for services ren-
dered as soldiers, until the days of their

crown worn by the Queen of. Great Britain
at. the opening of Parliament is composed of
hoops of silver which are completely covered
and concealed by precious stones, havmg a
Maltese cross of diamonds on the the top_of
.it. In the centre of this cross is a magnifi-
cent sapphire. In front of the crown, above
the rim, is another Maltese cross, in the nud-
dlc of which is the large unpolished ruby
which once gracéd the coronct of the chival-
rous Black Prince, and underneath this, in
the-circular rim, is another immense sapphire.
Tile arches enclose a cap of deep purple, or
rather blue velvet; and the rim of the crown

‘ at its base, is clustered with brilliants, and

 

ornamented with flew/'3 do lis and Maltese .

crosses equally rich. There are many other
precious gems—emeralds and rubles, sap-
phires, and small clusters of drop pearls of
great price. The crown is altogether valued
at over half million of dollars. Indeed, were
it possible to rc—collcct and again bring to-
gether such precious stones, this estimate
would fall much below their in ic value.
The old crown of England, mad , r George
III. weighed upwards of seven pounds, but.
notwithstanding this gorgeous display of
jewelry, independent of the gold cap, the pre-
sent crown only weighs nineteen ounces and
ten pennyweights. It measures seven inches
in height from the gold circle to.the_upper
cross, and its diameter at the rim is five
inches.

bulls eye one inch above the center. The ri—

vious firing adjusted precisely to the mark,
and in that position was locked ilnniovably
in a heavy iron frame. Victoria pulled .the
trigger by a long string, hit the mark as stated
and as a token of her skill the association
had a medal struck and presented her. The
target was up on exhibition at a shilling the

Bishop Brownell.

C. B. Ives, the eminent sculptor, formerly
of this city, but for sixteen years a resident of
Rome, is now engaged at Hartford in model-
ing a bulit of the-Bight Reverend Thomas C.
Brown'ell, the Presiding Bishop of the Epis-
copal Church in this country. It represents
the Bishop in his robes, and apart from the
likeness the characteristic expression of the
venerable prelatc is accurately preserved, and
a generous human feeling seems to pervade
