Steam on the Ganges.

The first of two steamers intended for the
regular navigation of the Ganges has just
been launched in England. Railways alread
intersect each other on the plains of Benga ,
and the whistle of the locomotive has signal-
ed to a. once cultivated but stationary race
the advance of a. more active and progressive
civilization. The solemn little idols that had
their abodes beneath the shad banyan trees
and in the clumps of fragran sandal-wood
are seeking remoter shrines; for their quaint
temples are profaned daily by the tread of
irreverent feet. And now the palm groves
of the Ganges will, resound with the clatter
of the engines that drive the puffinglsteamers
up against its languid curran he holy
waters upon which fair maidens were wont
to launch their tiny love lamps, and in which,
when they begmdond mothers, they religi-

ger rn silgnta ' ness to the sea. The sacred
mutton which the slimy crocodiles basked
»in'"undisturbed repose, and in which pious
Hindoos walloWed to cleanse themselves of
sin, will be continually stirred by the revolv-
ing paddle-wheels, and its oozy depths will
never henceforth subside into their primeval
stagnation. When the steamboats first began
to ply upon our Western streams,the red man
felt himself to be in the presence of a power
it was hopeless to resist, and he has steadil
fallen back at the approach of superior inte -
ligence and skill; and results somewhat sim~
ilar and equallystriking will ensure when the
arts rather than the arms of Britain, are en~
ergetically employed 1 in the subjugation of
India. The improvements already intro-
duced are but precursors of a. hundrcdstill to
follow, and are significant of the swee ing
changes they will necessarily effect: ith
telegraphs, railways, 11nd steamboats, all the
other machinery with which Europe is so
familiar will enter the country, Factories
will spring up around the towns, and saw-
mills .make havock in the great teak forests.
. ‘Mdst effective agricultural implements Will
supersede in the fields the antiquated and
cumbrous inventions that Originatcd‘a thou-
sand years ago; and the li ht palanquins will
go to the limbo of departe sedan-chairs, and
be replaced on the road by wagons that are
scarcely heavier. As novelties multiply,
ancient modes and customs will disappear ;
and as new ideas are developed, the institu-
tions that are most coevai With the aborigi-
nes will gradually give way, and the people
be brought into nearer conformity with the
usages of modern civilization. ‘ - ' - '
It seems like an idle dream to look for-
ward to all this, but it may nevertheless find
its fulfillment. '. Not that such results are to
be wrought out through sudden change and
rapid transformations of existing conditions,
but they will gbe accomplished, if at all, by
the slow and patient processes of years. The
nation has already lost many of its distinct-
ive features, and the faded pageant which
now represents the living history ‘of Hindoo-
stan bears little resemblance to the glowing
and splendid panorama that-illustrated it a
century ago. The binding light of countless
diamonds no longer blazes from the throne
of the Moguls, and the keen scimetars of the
.Mahratta squadrons have. ceased to gleam
in the Dcckau. Juggernaut no more goes
crushing over rows of prostrate i pilgrims ;
cows are slaughtered despite the devout hor:
ror of learned Brahmins; and Widows take
out letters testamentary when their husbands
die, instead of affectionately roasting them-
selves. The tigers are dying out in the tan-
gled jungles, and their places are usurped by
pigs. The lordly elephant that used to travel
so serenely along the the highways with his
. howdah full of turbanned princes will soon
be ranked with the beasts of burden that are
reserved only for ignoble tasks; and he will
be left to plod aldng with his heavy load,:and

enjoy his dim reflections undistractedly, save '

when some hurrying train startl‘e's him into
unwanted activity as he lumbers across its
? track. The picturesque succumbs to the prac-
. ticaL- The maidens of Decca, will, dOubtless
forego its gossamer muslins .for the gaudier
tissues of the Manchester looms, and give the
preference to 'Rowlan d’s Macassar; - when it
‘ competes in the markets with'-tl_ie;_cost;lyf,ot-
tar. of roses; and damsels whpse‘fectljas yet,
, unfettered by artistic rules,,keep time only to
the tinkling of their den-gles, will whirl‘lnjn-
terrriinable polkas amid the dillOI' operatic

sand persons visited Barnum’s Museum, New
York, on the Fourth of July.
