The Phantom Lover
Some years ago I was traveling in Spain,
and one day while passing from Llcncna to
Badajos, the “cochc public-o," or stage coach,
in which I was riding, broke .down a few
miles distant from the last named placc.—~ .
The passengers, with two exceptions, re-
solved to remain at a small “casa dc posada”
until another conveyance could be procured.
The two exceptions were myself and ayoung
“ Don.” We concluded that the few miles
which we wouldliavc to walk would be pre-
ferable to the. miserable accommodations to
be found—at the roadside inn, WlllCll was a].

From’the' land of the Arab I’d not have thee stay,
When'duty-and glory both call thee away;
I’dnot have thee linger at home by my side: .
What: others are humbling the infidel’s pride!
Nay, go and woo glory with thy trenchant hand,
Then return and claim your Enriqnita’s hand.”
“ I thank thee, fair maiden,” brave Marco replied,
“My heart is as true as the glave at my side,
Sol prove disloyal, so I prove untrue,

Thus saying he vaulted on his steed amsiu,
And swift as the wind he sped over the plain,
And left Enriquita her ’kcrchief lave
With tears, and to sorrow for Marco the brave.

Enriquita was comely, transcendently fair,
And great'was her dolor and great her despair,
. But when her brave lover was no longer nigh,
Like the dew from a flower tied the teur‘from her eye;
Another gay knight had now entcr’d her bow‘r,
Lead comely in person, less mighty in pow‘r,
From her faithless bosom he soon drove away.

There‘s dancing and feasting in the balls to night.
The tables are laden, the'goblcts flash bright,
An hundred bright lamps blend theirlight in the hall,

Right gaily the plumes dance on each knightly brow,
And bright eyes are sparkling like dew-drops,I trow,
Some deftly are treading the light measures ’round,
Making the old castle with mirth to resound.

’Tis the wedding night of Enriquita fair,
‘A thousand sweet fiow’rs are perfuming the air,
And minstrels are playing soft aria’s sweet,
’Mid the song and the jeer, and the patter of feet ;
Hark! without the grim watch-dog ’gan hoarsely to
bay. '
The owlet to hoot in the turret so gray,
The armor ’gnn trembling which hung on the wall,
And blue burn’d the lamps which illumin‘d the hall.

Forth thro‘ the arch‘d'doorway came striding a knight
Batter‘d was the armor in which he was dight,
The weapons he were were ull.sable and black,
His shield and his helmet, his acton and jack;
Noiseless as the spider he strode thro’ the hall,
The ladies fled screaming, the knights drew back all
Forward he went to the trembling bride‘s seat, ’
Nor stop‘d he Imtil he was cloeze to her feet.

And now a dense mist began filling the hall,
Which obscured the light of the lamps one and all,
A roar like the tempest wa‘s heard passing by,
And thephantom and maiden had vanish’d for aye;
’Tislong years since then and yet never a word,
of the false Enriquita has ever been heard,

Tm: GLORIOUS UNCEBTAINTY on THE
Lawn—The Wisconsin Legislatureihas for-
T'mally considered a proposition to abolish all
laws for the collection of debts. The mover.
.of thebill—Mr. Elmore—is a great wag, as
is evidenced by the following extract from
his speech upon the subject : _
_ "The speaker proceeded to review the
present system of colleL-Iing debts. .1; was
all a humbug and a cheat, a matter of techni-
calities and legal shuffling. Lawerg'gflve ad-
vicc in order to obtain :1 fee and encourage
litigation. Judges mnde blunders and mis-
takes. He had little experience in the law,
and that wasrich. [Laughton] He would
give a history of it. The speaker then rela-
ted how he had purchased a yoke of oxen
about fifty years ago—paid fifty dollars for
them—a few days after a son of the man of
whom he bought the oxen came to him and
said the oxen were his. He insisted on hav—
ing pay over again, and commenced a suit
before a Justice. The jury don’t agree. Fi-
nally, through the blunders of a Bushwood
Justice of the Peace, the case went out
against him. He appealed it to the Circuit
Court- in Milwaukic. There I lost again, and
said to’ my lawyer: ‘I will give you ten dol-
lars to quote Pennsylvania law to Judge
Miller and have a new trial ordered.’ [Great
laughter.] He took the ten dollars and per-
formed the duty.
A new trial was then granted, and venue
changed to \Valworth County. Judge Irwin
was then the Judge. Any lllatll‘wllh Wanted
to gain a case in his court had either to go
hunting with him and let the J udgc claim all
the game that was shot, or else pat his dog.
Well, I patted the dog. [Laughton] I fed
that dog with crackers. [Renewed laugh-
ter.] The case .was decided in my favor.—
Wben I heard the decision, I thought to my-
self the dog had t'ollowcd me about long
enough-I turned round, gave him a kick.—
[Laughtcn] The yelp of the dog had hardly
subsided ere _I heard the Judge say: ‘Mr.
Clerk, this judgment is set aside, undo new
trial granted. [Great laugliter.] er. Speak-
er, that kick cost me $200! [Convulsivc
laughter.] You havcno doubt seen a snitin
a Justice's Court in the country. There is
time spent by jurors andlmngers on, besides
other costs, at least $50, besides . the‘ ill fcel~
ings and dissensions caused byit. It is all a
cheat. The litigants liadbetter sit down and
play a name of old sledge to decide the case.
