A BROKEN HEART AND irs l-Iisroav. —
Many months ago in the neighboring
town of Belchcrforln a young mun sought
and re
a young lady, whose home was in the lap
of luxury, whose mcnthl and persoual
attractions made all pleasant around her,
Like too many coufidiug ones of her sex
she trusted man’s unhallowed promise and
yielded all to him. From that hour he
estranged himselffrom her and soon re-
moved to a dirtint state. “Then it br-
came evident that he had exposed him—
self to the penalty of the law, at the re-
quest of her friends he visited her to ful-
fill the vows he had long before made.—
They were married in one of those hasty,
unceremonious ways which occupy but
little time or attention. Late in the eve-
ning they returned to her father’s house,
Where he left her in the street, promising
to return in a short time. But that
promise never was fullfilled. She wrote
to him and received encouragement that
he would soon provide a home for her,
but delay followed delay, till her. letters
and entreaties Wore unhecded and nuan-
swered. At’leugth a pledge of woman’s
love to her husband came into the world
to open a new fountain of affection to
the young wife. Still the husband and
father came not. Tire mother recovered
from her confinement, but, after repeated
letters to her husband, found no answer,
the idea that she was deserted forced it-
self upon her, and she gave way to des-
pondency and despair. The child parta-
king of its {mother’s grief soon died—3
There was nothing more that she could
live for, and though suffering from no dis-
ease, she sank upon a dying bed. Then
the swift wings of lightning bore to the
distant husband the intelligence that she
was dying. He 'still hesitated, but at
length set out to meet his expiring wife.
Conscious that her hours were few, she
only wished to live long enough to see
her husband—he was still all to her.—

him that I still love him, that I .lie ftl‘
him.” When evening shadowed the
earth the husband came. As he ap-
proached the bedside of his injured wife,
he was recognized, and the words “ He’s
come,” burst from her lips. Already had
the wing of the death angel cast its shad
ow over that d veiling, and she was en-
tering the dimucss of the dark valley.—
Next morning in that room lay the corpse
of a beautiful'young wife, on which the
husband had looked for the last time and
On a Sabbath afternoon the
funeral of the young wife took place under
her father’s roof. Her neighbors and
friends to the number of five hundred
were present, but the husband who had
left her to die for him 'was not there ;
and, as the sun was sinking behind the
\Vestcrn hills, four young ladies of her
acquaintance, clad in garments of white,
bore'her to a grave in the garden, where
the green turf was laid gently pver her.
Such is the story of one who died of a
broken heart. The grave is a quiet place
for the injured wife, but where in all the
world can there be peace for him who
would thus bring sorrow and death upon

in pressing it upon Congress is manifest.
The 'topic was seized upon simply because
it presented an occasion for keeping up
the discussion there of the slavery ques-
tion, which their partisans affect so much
to deprecate and to procure by party
discipline 3. hecision from Congress in
favor of the rights of property in negroes
imported from Africa, in violation of the
nation under whose flag the negroes were
‘ brought away-
This point Mr. Dixon brings out in
bold relief. But in the Concluding part
of his speech he exhibits the conduct of
the President and the political party by
which he was placed in power, in refer-
encc to this claim, in a still more impor-
tant aspect. What, he inquires, is the
value of those professions of hostility to
to the slave trade, and desire to procure
Cuba to enable the United States more
effectually to suppres it, when accompa-
nied by such persistent efforts to pay the
traders, whose violation of the law is so
much deplored, the value of a cargo of
negroes to whom the Supreme Court of
the United-States gave their liberty for
the reason that the claimants had viola-
ted the law of their country in holding
them as slaves ?- Can the President be
sincere when sparking of the toleration of
the slave tradein Cuba, he says, “ this is
to us a constant source of injury and au-
iioyauce,” and yet press upon Congress
the propriety of paying fifty thousmid
dollars to the kidnappers who cause us
this injury and annoyance? We must
be excused if we think his acts in refer-
ence to this flagitions claim, as well as
those of his officers in summoning juries

the present juncture than his grave argu-
