Take Care of your Teeth.
We again venture to Speak of a sub-
ject at the risk of being thought to no-
tice trifles. But we consider the matter
now to be noticed not a trifle, but one of
serious importance. The Americans are
remarkable for neglecting the teeth.—
Paley says that “ GCd did make the
teeth to ache.” But, however, this may
be, it is no doubt owing to neglect that
they do ache. The teeth were given us
by nature for many highly necessary pur-
poses. They are .indispensible in pro--
paring the food for the stomach, equally
so in speech. They suffer as much as
the skin by neglect and they make known
their complaint when neglected in a man-
ner which cannot be disregarded. . -
Notwithstanding these things are so,
probably not. one child in some hundreds
in the United States, uses such a thing
:18 a brush for the teeth. Whatsocvcr
nature has given to us, she has required
of us to use according to her laws and
consequently we are to preserve what she
has given to be used; This is not the
less true of the teeth than it; is of the
eyes, the muscles or the- digestive powers.
\Ve‘frequently see males and females
whose intelligent and pleasing‘expression
of coimtenance prepossesses us in their
favor, but the moment; they go to speak
or laugh, the charm vanishes and We feel
a sensation of disappointment at; the dis-
closures which they make. This is the'
consequence of ignorance Or neglect, for
which parents are directly chargeable.—
Ignorance is not; an excuse for the viola-
lion of any plain law of nature, and a
voluntary neglect aggravates the wrong.
If a child has once learned the comfort.
of cleanliness in this respect, he will duly
value it and never give it up. We hear
a. great deal in certain quarters about
' angels ,- it is doubtful, we think, whether
we shall ever see them. But be that as
it may, if there be a lovely object to the
human eye, it is‘ a clean, clear-faced
healthy, innocent, neatly clad and happy
child ; and’onc greatlneaus of producing-
this is to secure for it. good teeth.
nally, since the toothache is an ill, which
. not even a philosopher can endure cheer-
fully, and since cheerfuluess is the great-
est blessing of life, we dismiss the subject
with the important admonition with

FARMERS’ TOOLS AND TOOL. HOUSE.—
Every farmer should have a good supply
of tools, not. Only ploughs, barrows culli-
vators‘ and mowers, with the scythes,
forks, rakes, spades and shovels, which
no good-farmer can do without ; but. the
smaller, though no less useful kinds, that
are so handy when the larger Ones get
broken or out of , order, or when it be-
comes necessary to make a nice new fence
or gate, or repair the thOusand and one
things that need fixing up about the prem-
ises. If the farmer must go to the ear-
penter or blacksmith for every little re-
pair that is needed, he will lose a great
deal of time and often at a season when
a day’s work is worth a whole week’s at
another time.
The first essentials for the proper keep-
ing of tools is a good tool house, with a
door and good lock and key. If every
one about a farm works when he chooses
with edged tools they will not long have
an edge. It is better to let one man do
all work of this kind, and he will find it
necessary to keep all the tools in good
order ; for: it must be recollectcd that.
dull tools will never do good work, nci-
ther will a good workman use such. A
tool house enables you to keep everything
in its proper place, where you can find it
at once, without asking every one of the
family, "Where’s that saw ?” or “where’s
that hatchet ?” and then discovering that
it must be sharpened before using. In such
a house—null it need not be large—you
can put up a carpenter’s bench, with
screw. The latter will cost but a few
' Shillings. Have a little rack on the wall
behiudit, in which to put. your half doz~
cu chiscls and gouges, screw-driver, &c..-
and above it. hang your ripping, cross-cut
and teuou saws. These with a set Of
plains, brace and bits, whctstoueysquure
hammer and hatchet, will do well for a
beginning, not, however, forgettinga few
good angers, When you need . more
tools, buy them ; but with those named
you can repair almost anything of wood.
A vlcc for iron will be found of great use
and may be put; up at one cud of the
room, having a. good three-inch plank for
a bench top. A twenty-five pound vice
will do, but a heavier one is better.—
With it. you need a chipping hammer,
two cold Chisels, and two or three bus-
tard-cut files, the largest a fourteen inch
flat. One may be a'half-rouud twelve-
inch. The “iron” tools will not come as
often into use as the others, but will he
sometimes found very necessary.
Put all these tools in the best; order,
and keep them so. Let no rust disfigure
them.- Rust is best prevented by the use
of a little fallow rubbed over them occa-
sionally, and moisture not allowed to en-
