other styles, and its relative cost, I take
this method of' answering the inquiry, for
the information of all persons who may
be interested in' the'snbjcct.
I am every way pleased with the gran
drum”, and think it superior, in all rcs-
pccts, to any other. It is now nearly
three years since I‘built a large square-
walled dwelling house of this material and
I have found it to combine every quality
desirable in the walls of such a structure.
It is permanent, not having settled or
cracked. It is warm in winter and cool
in summer. It is entirely free f rom damp-
ness, even in the dampest dog-days, no
moisture having been detected on the in-
tevior surface, though plastered directly
upon the wall, without furring out, as is
customary on stone or brick walls.—
Having formerly occupied a stone house,
which was at times (lamp, though furrcd
out and built with great care, the con-
trast in this respect is very noticeable.—
Being thus plastered directly on the wall
it afi‘m'ds no harbor or rare-course for car-
mia, to chase up and down, at all hours,
day and night, more to their own amuse-3
ment than to the culvrtaiment of the
helpless occupants within. If liolrls f/Ic
stucco perfectly, the surface being rough
and admirabon suited to this style of fin-
ish. If is elm 11), costing in this vicinity,
where gravel and filling-stones are easily
obtained, about one-third the price of
brick. Indeed, with my present experi-
once, I could build at even a less compar-
ative cost, perhaps one quarter. -
All things considered, I am so well
satisfied with the concrete or gravel wall,
that should I build again, I should prefer
' it to any other material with which I am
acquainted, even at the same cost.
In conclusion I will volunteer one sug-
gestion as to the manner of constructing
the wall. I pursued the common mode
and used “ flasks,” or boxes in laying the
wall. \Vere I to build again, I should
cast the material beforehand, in rough
boxes of the width of the wall and of any
covenient length, and lap the blocks thus
castinto mortar. This mode has many
advantages. All danger from the rain
while the walls, are still green and liable
to washing is thus obviated ; the walls
can be thus made perfectly true and per-
pendicular without the constant trouble
of moving and adjusting the flasks, which
are very liable to be moved out of place ;
jets and angles can be easily accommo-
dated to the shape of the wall, and the
builder’s taste can be gratified in this res-
pect as readily as by any other material.
“Instead of the square or octagon form,
”best suited to the flask mode of construc-
tion, he can adopt the cottage or any
other style, however irregular and angu-
lar. , ..
I shall be pleased to communicate any
ioformation which my experience may
have all rdcd me, in relation to the do
tails of this mode of building, believing it
to be highly conducive to the promotion
of domesticeconomy and comfort.

boring localities. For instance—Connec-
ticut is horrified at the idea of permitting
circus exhibitions, but stoutly repudiatcs
the Maine law. Up in Massachusetts, a
circus delights the entire population, and
exhibitions of that nature are welcomed
and warmly patronized, whilst the Maine
law is rigidly enforced! In Massachu-
sctts, therefore, it is plentyof amusement
but no rum—in Connecticut plenty of rum
but no amusement. The Hartford papers
mention the arrival of a large company,
on the “ Granite State,” on route for
Springfield—hthe law prohibiting a stop
in the'land of steady habit3‘; and a very
ridiculous law it is, in the opinion of a
good many sensible people. '

cific Ruilroad, and suggests that the
best plan to get a Pacific Railroad is for

national democratic Senators and Mom-
bers‘ of Congress. These mm are a
much greater obstruction to the load
