Terlible Earthquake in South America.
By a late arrival from Equador, South
America," the following particulars have
-. been received of the visitation of an earth-
‘l quake'npoa the city of Quito, attended
with a melancholy destruction of human

On the 22nd day of March, at half
past eightjin‘ the morning an earthquake
which‘mhnbk the mountain range of the
Chimborazo for the space of four minutes
destroyed-3almostentirely the city of Qui-
to, and killed from‘2000 to 5000 persons

and Santa Barbara. There is scarcely
a. house in the city that is not badly dam-
aged. ' . _
That portidn of the Palace occupied by
the Ministerof the Interior, a great part
of the College of San Luis and the splen-
did man‘siou of Dr. Albuja, have also fal-
len." Ail'the principal of the nelghbor-
iug towns of San Antonio, Cotocollo,
Machaca, 'Chilogallo and Magdalena have
been destroyed. The loss of property is
estimated at three millions of dollars;
and from the poverty of the peOple .it
will be impossible to repair and rebuild
any great number of the better class of
edifices destroyed. The shocks were felt
simultaniously in Tacunga, Ambato and
Alausi, and in Timpullo the earth opened
in various places. The earthquake was
also felt at Guayquil, but did no damage
there. ..;
The temples of San Fransisco, (101.811-
grario and Santa Clara Were of lJCfllltlful
architecture; the temples and convcnts
of Santo Domingo, 1a Mei-cod and San
Augusta, all had fine stone facades and
towers ;. the temples of Santa Catalina
and Concepcion, and the Hospital, also
had‘stoue facades.
Quitois said to contain about 50,000
inhabitants. It is built on an extensive
plain. Against the mountains of Pano-
cilo and Pichincha, and is about 9,500
feet above the level of the sea. Most of
the houses are two stories, some three and
a 'part one story. Many are built of
burnt brick, with handsome facades, but
the greatest portion are unburned brick
or adobe. ,

.Aounous ERUPTION IN NEVADA COUN-
TY.—The Sacramento Standard gives the
following particulars of a remarkable plie-
nomeno'n of nature, which occurred on
Saturday morning, February 26th, at 8
o’clock, on Wot Hill, a mining point situ-
ated four miles east of Grass Valley :
'31“ Michael Cullen and Joseph McChes-
ney were engaged working on an open
cat with a. view to drain the hill, which
contained numerous Springs of water.—
At the upper end of the out they had at-
tained a. perpendicular depth of about
thirty five feet, when the indications were
of a kind to excite suspicions of danger.
They therefore removed their tools as ex-
peditiously as possible, and had barely
made their escape when an eruption of
water and sand took place, washing vio-
lently through the cut, increasing its
width by the abrasion, and extending
around in every direction, until an
area of about five or six acres was open-
ed into an immense crater belching forth
Water and sand.
Trees were undermined, and, falling
into the boiling vortex, snapped off as
though they had been dried sticks. Con-
tinuing its «headlong course, a terrific vol-
ume of 'water descended into Buena Vista
Creek, tearing away the hills, displacing
ponderons boulders, precipitating stumps,
logs, trees, and everything in its path in-
to the valley below. A field belonging
to Mr. Kelly, and under cultivation, was
covered in spots to the depth of fifteen
and twenty feet. The ranch of Mr. Mc-
Carty, low er down on the creek, was ma-
terially injured ; and the much of Mr.
Taylor, still lower down, sustained dani-
age to the extent of several thousands of
dollars. Miners were driven from their
claims—some with the loss of tools, ini-
provemeuts, sliiicesboxes, &c., and others
to behold the labor of years destroyed,
beyond the hope of profit or reclamation.
The spectacle, notwithstanding ifs seri-
ous results, is described as having been
sublime.”

‘ refreshing story, which we commend to
, theattcntion of those in the habit of
“ tipping the mug.” A few (lays since
- saysthat paper, a man went into one of
the beer shops in town, and callcd for a
‘ Iinlfa pint of ale. The ale was brought
to him in a common pint measure; he
drank a little, and thinking it tasted rath-
er qucoriy, asked the store-keeper if any-
thing was the matter with his beer. The
, answer was, that it was first-rate beer——
just bought in Bustoa. This satisfied the
customer, and he'sWailowed the remain-
der of the beer. When he got through
. seeing something in the bottom of the
measure, he asked what it v. as. “ I de-
clare,” said the shopkeeper, “ I forgot to
take out the soap the last time I shaver .”

We say fire proof, not because they are so
labelled. but because we have so provcd
them. Our books and papers came out im-
injured, save the binding of the books, occa-
sioned by steam.
Our store was five stories above ground,
and two stories below, occupied from collar
to garrct. The intensity of the heat can be
attested to by any fireman who wilncsscd it.
No furnace can be contrived by the logo-
nuity of man to create a more intense boat.
We voluntarily give this tribute to the value
