=N addition to the preservation of the town
Recoi'(ls,of this place, in two of our safes
at short time since, we would call attention
to the following letter written to the Editor.
of the New York Courier and Enquirer :
llfii.Eni'ron :—-In the fire at No. 39 Warren
street. on the morning of the 9th iiist,our
Iost valuable books and papers were exposed
for 36 hours in one of Stearns do Murviu’s
Fire Proof Safes.
We say fire proof, not because they are so
labelled. but because we have so provcd
them. Our books and papers came out un-
injured, save the binding of the books, occu-
sioned by steam.
- Our store was five stories above ground,
and twofitories below, occupied from cellar
to garret. The intensity of the heat can be
attested to by any fireman who witnessed it.
No furnace can be contrived by the inge-
nuity of man to create a more intense heat.
We voluntarily give this tribute to the value
of these Safes. and select your widely circu-
uted commexcialjournal to inform the mer-
cantile community what ‘estimate to place

blood, by which this fluid becomes -vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, and may burst out
111 disease on any part of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low li\'ing,’dis-
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by the venereal infection. 'What.
ever be its origin. it is hereditary in the con-
stitution, descending “ from parents to children
unto the third and fourth generation ;" indeed,
it-seems to be the rod of Him who says, --1
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children.”
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver. and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands. swelling}; and on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul cor-
ruption, which genders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrcfulous constitu-
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com-
plaints, but they have far less power to with-
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse- _
quently, vast numbers. perish by disorders
which, although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the cbnsumption which de-
cimates the human family has itaorigimdirectly
in this scrofulous contamination; "and many
destructive diseases of the" liver, kidneys, brain,
and. indeed, of all the oi‘-gans.‘arise fi'o1Ii'or
are aggravated by the same cause. _
