If it is desired to fatten fowls in a very
short time, the y should be confined in
small coups. ’Baily says ; “A coop for
twelve fowls should be thirtyiuches high,
three feet long, and twenty-two inchbs
deep; it should stand about two feet
from the ground, the front made of bars
three inches. apart ; the . bottom also
made of bars about an inch and a half
apartto insure cleanliness, and made to
run the length of the coop, so that the
fowlconstantly stands, when feeding or
resting, in the position of perching ; the
sides, buck-"and top may be made the
same, or‘the back may be solid. Some
writers thinkljt better to make half of the
floor a little inclined,.and to cover it with.
a board. " "Troughs for feed and water
should ~be~fastened around .the edge of
the coop, and the whole placed in an out-
building, asa barn or shed, away from
other fowla.‘ For the first twenty-four
hours give water, but no food. On the
second' day commence feeding regularly
three times daily with the most nutritious
food, such as oatmeal mixed with milk,
boiled wheat, &c. The troughs should
be‘cleansed daily, and plenty of fresh
clean water given ;" and the fowls must
be fed very early in the morning, and all
theywill eat at all times. In from four-
teen to twenty days they will be in their
best condition, when they should be killed
for if kept longer they soon become dis-
eased. : .
Poaltrymay be fattened quicker and
more perfectly by stuffing, but it is an
unnatural. as well as an inhuman practice
and we cannot recommend it.

May, in latitude 43° will do well to fat-
ten when three months old, but Shang-
hae, Malay and Java chicks should be at
least a,month older.

“ Well, I’ll tell you the whole secret ;
its just this: Taking .good care of the
critters, and feeding. them just what they
like, with a little knack of getting as
much inside of them as possible. When
I takes a poor critter,*I makesit a point
first to start him, so I'first gives him a
good scrubbing oncefor twice. and I boils
sweet corn and milk. and feeds to him, or
I boils up some hasty pudding with milk,
arid mixes a little molasses with it, just
give them most anything they ‘ like. best
to give them a start, and when they once
get started, I gets inside of them’ all I
can. For instance, I gives them some
. meal, and when they have eaten all they
will of that, I throw in a few clams, or
home fish, or some waste from the slaugh-
terhouse, and they eat that too; so I
gets more inside of them, and that’s what
does the business. * * * Give them
something else when they have eaten
their fill of one thing. As for making
anything ofa hog by giving them meal,
meal, meal, everlastingly, I don’t believe

thus refers to the matter : “ I have recent-
ly heard much about the value of newspa-
pers as a substitute for blankets,and have

_ , phal. But last evening I wasinduccd to
., 3 make the experiment I took four full-sized

newspapers and pasted them together at
the edges, making one large sheet the size
of a blanket. I then removed three blan-
kets from my bed, and placed the newspa-
per sheet between the one remaining blan-
ket and the counterpane. The result was
' 'a comfortable night’s sleep without any fee-
ling of cold. This is literilly true, and my
object in making this communication is
that the fact may be generally circulated,
for it isno trifling matter to the poor to
know that for the outlay of a few pennies
they can supply themselves wiih a com-
fortable bed-covering through the winter.
