[6" A singular case has just been de-
cided against the‘ Commissioners of Emi
gration at New York. It appears that
an Irish widow lady came to this country
in,Augnst, 1857, bringing with her three
trunks for which checks were given her
at Castle Garden, by the proper officers.
In one of these trunks she claims was a
gold watch. two gold chains, 240 80ver-
eigns and other articles. The woman
foolishly stated to one of the officers
that there was money in one of her trunks ;
when she called for the trunk the next
day it was refused and she has never seen
it. In the Court of Common Pleas a
verdict has been rendered for the plaintiff
in the sum of $1,388,733, the value of
the articles in the trunk.

Harlem River is now navigable for ordi-
nary steamboats and small vessels, at all
times of tide, for 5 1-2 miles above Har-
lem, and it is said that if Spuyten Duy-
vel Creek is straightened—which can he
done at little expense in a few months-—
the communication by water between the
North and East Rivers, for vessels of
common size, will be a fixed fact.

of the Ministers from the Republic of
Nicaragua to the Government of the Uni-
ted States, has sued the proprietors of the
New York Times for libel, laying the
damages to his character at the sum of
$25,000.

N the great fire, last week, in this place,
two of the above Safes passed through
the intense heat, preserving the whole of
their books and papers in perfectly legible
condition. We say intense, for they were ta-
ken out of the store and left on the sidewalk.
within six feet of the fire, exposed to the
whole of it, without one drop of water being
thrown on them. They belonged to, or Were
purchased by the Selectmen of Norwalk.
