A Ransom—By eating too much clever
or the much green corn, cows not ,pnl‘re-
quently become “ hovcn,” that Is the fer-
mentation 0f the mass of green food in
the first stomach becomes so great as to
distend them with gas and so interrupts
the process of digestion as to kill them.
A writer in the Louis‘dIIc Journal says
that when symptoms of this disorder ap-
pear, the cow should be turned into her
stall, and a stout, straw rope made, and
having been th0r0nghly twisted, (an inch
and a half in diameter,) be put into her
mouth, and tied over the top of her head,
behind her horns. After securing it well
turn the cow loose, and, in her endeavors
to get rid of it she will so turn up her
head as to allow of the escape of the gas
and in fifteen minutes she will be relieved.
The writer tried the remedy upon six
cows at one time, with immediate success
and has also seen it tried in other ins-
tances, with like results.

Cauliflowers in Winter.
The following direction for the manage-
ment of Cauliflower plants at f/uis .vcusmt,
so as to have fine heads in winter, are
worth more than a year’s subscription to
the Country Gentleman,from which paper
we take it, to any one who has unhcaded
plants in his garden. They were given
by Mr. Downing, in an early vol. of the
Horticulturist :
Some of our readers may not be aware
that'cauliflowers may be had all winter,by
taking up such plants as have not yet
formed any flowering heads when the
sharp weather sets in, and replanting
them-in three or four inches of soil in the
bottom of any cellar or root-house, shel—
tered from the frosts. It is not necessary
that they should have any light in frosty
weather, and they may be rc-planted as
closely as they will stand. Our table
was supplied with delicious cauliflowcrs
during the whole of last winter by this
simple means.

VALUABLE Discovsnv.——',l‘he French
journals state that the Empress lately
went to witness some experiments conduc-
ted by M. Carteron, the inventor of a
process for rendering wood tissue of all
sorts, theatrical decorations, &c., incom-
bustible. The experiments are reported
to have been entirely successful. Fire
was applied to ladies’ dresses of the most
gauze like materials, but they would not-
burn. An officer’s tent containing a bed
with muslin curtains, resisted the appli-
cation of numerous flaming torches.—
A- cottage half of which was secured
by Mr. Carteron’s preparation, and the
other part filled with straw, was set
on fire on the unprotected side ; the flames
raged with fury, and consumed half of the
building, but the fire died away, when it
reached the prepared part. and left it al-
together intact. A theatre with all its
scenery, ropes and decorations, was at-
attempted to be burned in vain. ’I‘hcir
Majesties, who remained upwards of an
hour, expressed great satisfaction at what
they had witnessed, and the Empcrror
gave £500 to the workman employed.

THE BRAIN IN CHILnnoon.——It is a fact
well attested by experience, that the
memory may be seriously injured by pres-
sing upon it too hardly and continuously
in early life. “That ever theory we hold
as to this great function of our nature, it
is certain that its powers are only grad-
ually developed, and that if forced in to
premature exurcise, they are impaired by
theefi'ort. .This is a maxim indeed, of
general import applying to the condition-
al culture of every faculty of body and
mind ; but singularly to the one we are
now considering which forms, in one sense
the foundation of intellectual life. A
regulated exercise, short of fatigue, is im-
proving to it, but we are bound to refrain
from goading it by constant and laborious
efforts in early life, and before the instru-
ment is strengthened to its work, or it
decays under our hands.

COAL TAIL—“A correspondent of the Bridge-
port (Conn) Standard complains that the Gas
Company, by pouring their refuse coal tar in
the harbor, has killed or driven away all the
eels, oysters and scalops. by the catching of
which many poor families were supported.”
What a waste ! This coal tar might
be made very useful, and would more
than pay the expense of package and
storage, as may be shown. At every con-
siderable coal depot, there. accumulate
large quantities of coal dust, as the collicrs
call it ; that is, fragments of coal from
the-bigness of a piu’s head to that of a
pepper corn, which is of the best quality
for burning and yet in that form, worth-
less. . At the mines we have seen thou-
sands of tons in a heap. Now if this coal
dust, abundant in Boston, Bridgeport,
and any place where coal is used, were
mixed with the refuse tar of gas works in
such quantity as should make the coal
dust adhere and let it be thrown into bil-
lets of the size and Shape of bricks, per—
haps a little sawdust mingled, it would
make the choicest material for kindling
that can be imagined. Not only for do—
mestic use in the kitchen and parlor, but
on a grand scale in locomotives and stonin-
boats. The tar of concse is highly com-
bustible, and all know the difficulty of
kindling anthracite unless plentifnfly fed
with kindlings. The coal dust of our city
coal yards is now for the most part lost ;
by this precess it might be saved.
A similar use might be made of the tar
by mingling it ‘with sawdust alone, from
the lumber mills. That would make mate—
rial for kindling still better. An article
of this sort is now made, using the com-
mon tar from the pine tree for the cement;
but it is sold at a very high price—~a piece
of the size of a brick for fifty cents.
Now it is a pity to'trouble the eels of
Bridgeport harbor, and abridge the coin—
fort of the poor people there, when with
a little ingenuity and enterprise so good
ause may be made of the tar—to the
saving also of much coal.

There is as much connection between the
words and the thoughts as there is bc-
twccn the thoughts and the words ; the
latter are not only the expression of the.
former, but they have a power to react
upon the soul, and leave the stains of their
corruption there, A young man who al-
lows himself to use one profane or vulgar
word has not only shown that there is a
foul spot in his mind, but by the utterance
of that word he extends that spot and in—
flames it till, by indulgence, it will soon pol-
lute and ruin the whole soul. Be careful
of your words as well as your thoughts.
If you can control the tongue, that no
improper words are pronounced by it, you
will soon be able also to control the mind
and save that from corruption. You ex-
tinguish the fire by smothering it, or by
preventing bad thoughts bursting out in
language. Never utter a word anywhere
which you would be ashamed to speak in
the presence of the most refined female, 1
or the most religious man. Try this
practice a little while, and you will soon
have command of yourself.
