Union plain, appeared at the Jefferson
Market l’olice Court, and made complaint
against one '.l.‘_homas W; Boyd, charging
'him with stealing the sum of 55. A. war-
‘i‘nlit was issued and placed .in the hands
of Ollieer Bowers, attached to the Court,
who made search for Boyd, but was
unable to find him. On 'l‘hnrsdav Offi-
cer Bowers received inihrination that his
man was connected with a theatrical
rpmpany performing in Connecticut.———

heir—Huron, then to Stamford, and
finally to horwalk, where he was to play
that night. Ofiicer' Bowers arrived in
horwalk late on the Thursday afternoon,
and Boyd’s feelings can be better imagin-
ed than described when the officer, laying
his hand upon him at his hotel, said “ You
are my priconer.” Boyd, alias T. W.
Bogart explained his position, and gave
the officer a programme headed, “ Amer-
ican Star Dramatic Company; Tyrrell,
Bogart 8:. Wallace. Proprietors ; T. W.
Bogart, Treasurer and Business Agent.”
The bill announced the performance of
“ Black-eyed Susan,” or “ All in the
Downs,” in which Boyd, alias Bogart was
cast for the character of “Jacob Twig. ”
Mr. Bogart was also announced to sing a
“ Yankee Song—Independence Day”—
and take part in the farce of ” Paddy
Miles’ Boy.” '
As that was the “ grand opening night”
of the Company, Boyd begged of the Olli-
cer permission to appear in the perform-
ance, which was granted. At the termin-
ation of the play Officer Bowers took
charge of his prisoner, and kept him in
custody during the night, and Friday
morning brought him to the city.
Mr. Watson alleges that he gave Boyd
who had been in his employ as boakeeper
fora year and a half, the sum of $54 to
deposit in the Mechanics’ Bank, and that
Boyd, instead of doing so appropriated
the money to his own use, and fled the
Mr. Watson says that he has treats
ed the accused with great kindness, and
given him opportunities to make himself
a position in business. He further char-
ges Boyd with collecting bills and. appro-
priating the money to his own use and on
One occasion drawing a. check for $100
instead of $50, and putting the odd $50.

SUN STROKE—This is the season for
moped soliel, or sun stroke. A cotempo-
rary recommends to laborers in the sun,
the employment of coarse palm leaf hats,
with a moist sponge in the top. Vile be-
lieve that very nearly as efficient profec:
tion may be obtained by filling the top of
the hat with cotton, as is practised in
some localities. It has been affirmed that
no one was ever known to be affected
cotton over his head. A remedy so sim-
ple deserves to be generally known.

168 tons of Anthracite Coal in l857, and
a similar decrease is expected this year
The trade is about 200,000 tons behind
the trade at same date last year. This
falling oll‘ is utterly uimrcccdeiited ; from
1854 to 185.5 the increase was 694,000
tons, and in each year since 1820 there
had been some increase; but notwith-
standing the iii -rease of population, it
seems probable that the increase can not
be sustained. Speaking on this point the
Miner’s Journal says :
Although the Coal Trade is so depres-
sed at home, we observe by the reports of
Importations, that the weekly value of
Coal entered at New York from abroad
ranges from seventeen to twenty thousand
dollars, A boatman informed us that
the freight on a cargo of coal from Liver-
pool, was only $1 per ton to New York,
while the cost of delivering a ton of coal
froin Pottsvill to New York in freight,
toll and towage, is now $2 13. There is
not much hope for labor and for profit on
the iart of those engaged in this business,
under the miserable, and we were going to
say criminal policy of our government-—

tures recently delivered in several of our
large cities and villages to crowded houses.
These Lectures were originally prepared
for the benefit of the pupils of our public
and private schools. and in order that par-
alarm. France is arming; her naval now-
er has been largely increased; her alliance
with Russia is becoming strengthened
every day; but for what she is making
these increased armaments, or on whom
the bolt is to fail, seems to" be unknown.
The very uncertainty of the stroke ren-
