London Times relates the following cen-
tradictory experience :—
“ The Chinese are certainly not a nor-
vous race. 0n the parade ground to the
east of this walless and citadclless city of
Victoria, some 500 men of the 50th may
be daily seen at their exercise. A cloud
of Chinese children take advantage of the
severity of discipline to hang upon their
skirts, steeping down and picking up the
cartridge papers from between the feet of
the immovable redcoats, who dare not
even raise a foot to tread upon the fingers
that tickle their ankles. We are too
poor in men to be able to spare any to
keep the ground. Up in the ravine be-
hind the Government House, a detach-
ment is firing at a target at a range Of
1000 yards. That target has its atten-
dant of more adult anhees. They can
scarcely be kept at a safe distance, and
when the bugle sounds to cease firing,they
rush in and dig out the wasted lead.—
Further off, on the top of the mountain,
with little flag-staffs fixed on rocks at va-
rious ranges, a field battery is practising
with shot and shell. Straight in the line
of fire, the Chinese washcrmen are spend-
ing their clothes to dry upon the brush-
WOod, quite unconcerned at the dischar-
ges, satisfied to confide in the skill of the
artillery men, and having a full practical
knowledge of the flight of shot. At the
short ranges the shells must pass a few
feet over their heads. It cannot be that
men who behave thus can be a. race of
cowards.”

16“ A meeting of the Congregational
Consociation was held at Stamford last
week to consider the request of Rev. H.
B. Elliot to be dismissed from the paste-
ral charge over the chneh in that village.
In January last the society voted to dis-
miss him, giving as a reason that they
could not pay his salary, $1,500. A few
of his friends offered to make up his sum
independently, and on inquiring it was
found that the difficulty arose entirely
from a few individuals who were disaffec-
ted at his pointed and practical preaching.
He then asked a dismissal but the conse-
ciation voted unanimously not to dissolve
the connection.

A PRINTER’S USUAL LUCK—Last week
a Cincinnati printer found $250 in bills.
Rich beyond his most sanguine hopes, he
immediately put on a “ sub,” and deter-
mined to rusticate in the country for the
mouth or so. Who shall describe his
chagrin when, after all his arrangements
were made, he discovered that the bills
were counterfeit.
