AS the managers of the steamboat Cata-
, line have reduced the fare between Nor.
walk and New York to 25 cents, the proprie-
tors of the
STEAMER CONFIDENCE,
Have resolved to do the same, and the public
may fily on the Confidence always running at
as low a rate as the Cataline, be it what it may.
A short time since, the manager of the
Catalina issued a bill, stating that if there
figs any Opposition on the Route, it would
be made by the Confidence, in the following
language: “ I come on the Norwalk route not
to run opposition, but to establish a good dai-
ly line, and all I ask is a fair share of the
public patronage. It is not my wish to injure
Mr. Green, or his business, but if an opposi-
tion should occur it certainly will be of his
own making.” The Public can now see which
Boat commenced the Opposition.

T venture, and of the primitive modes of life, among
the Indians and Trappers of the Great Northwestern
Territory. This grand and extensive portion of the
American Continent has been hitherto almost as a.
“ sealed book” to the civilized world. In those regions
a territory nearly as large as Europe has long been lock-
ed in the monopoly of the great Hudson’s Bay Compa-
ny, and its rival, the Northwestern Co. Private enter-
prise has not penetrated its solitudes, and of those
whose duties have called them there, and who have
participated in the treasures of this unknown land,
none have hithertoibcen willing tolexpose its mysteries,
or have possessed the power of portraying the perilous
and strange vicissitudes, through which they hays pass-
ed. Here we find classes of men, distinct.‘iudigenons
to the soil, or moulded by its peculiarities ; perfectly
original in charactre, utterly unlike in manners find
habits to any similar order in other lands. The Indian,
in all his natural wildness ; the half-breed, a strange
mixture of daring, simplicity and cunning ; the Trap-
‘per, who spurns the restraints of civilization, and rec-
ognizes no law but the fierce impulse of his own Will ;
the European Exile or Outcast ; the Outlaw of Canada
and the United States, who seek in the trackless wil-
dernessa refuge from the outraged laws of civilized
life.
Nor is this rude society denied the genial infiuencss
and humanizing effects of woman’s presence. Impellcd
by affection, hundreds of devoted women have accom-
panied these adventurous outcasts to this wild retreat,
while the population, the offspring of mixed races, con-
tains thousands of half-breed females, in whom the
passions, the graces, and the virtues of the softer sex,
are blended with the artlessness of nature, and the
wild freedom of a. life that knows no conventionalities.
In these reckless men the great rival Companies find
willing agents and unscrupulous tools : once engaged
in their service, but few ever return, or care to return,
to society. Among these people are enacted deeds of
rude chivalry, as brilliant and daring as any recorded
of the chivalric ages. And among them _ also are com-
mitted tragedies, and crimes of Wild passron, that can
find no parallel in history, or scarcely in fiction. Liv-
ing absolutely without law, and Without protection,
every man is, perforce, a law unto himself, and the ri-
fie and the tomahawk are the only arbitrers. _
Hero is a. glorious field for a novelist whose experi-
ence and talent fit him for the task of depicting its
events. Such a man is the author of ‘ ‘ NICK WHIF~
ELIE,” and in this story we venture to say that he has
surpassed every former effort. For fidelity to nature,
for graphic and dramatic force of style, and. for keen
delineation of character, there are few stories in the
language that can compare with “ NICK WHIFFLI.”
The author brings before the reader in life-like action,
the hardy Adventurers and the simple Natives of this
magnificent region. The crime, the wrongs, the mis-
fortunes and the unsophisticated virtues of the life he
