who have obtained political preferment,
or who yet expect to obtain it by such
service as this, we have nothing now to
sav. They sell for pay. But we wish
to'usk gentlemen of probity, who are op-
posed to forgery in private, why they de-
sire‘ to sustain it in public affairs? Is
cheating and swindling any better in
-Kaiisas than it is on South street, that
they should countenance a d approve it
there while they would denounce it here ?

ti-Slavery agitations of the country,” by
crushing the forms and the spirit of free-

their senses, and we are, therefore reluc-
tantly compelled to look forward to anoth-
er furious conflict arising beyond the hor-
izon of the Kansas troubles, out of the
grave questions connected with the Afri-
can Slave ’.'i‘i'adc. It is useless to con-
ceal froin the people of this country the
fact tliot nothing but ajust settlement of
the Kansas imbroglio, in a form which
shall convince the South that the North-
ern pcople value their rights and mean
to assert them, respect their ~; obligations
and mean to naintain them, can save us
from a fresh tempest of Southern clamors
demanding the complete rcvisal of the
traditional policy of the nation, and insist-
ing upon an unlimited license to flood the
magnificent territories of the Mississippi
and the Gulf with a. new population of
enslaved savages. It matters not that
the ancestral statesman of the South, the
men whose tombs V‘ 'giiiia is building
and whose names the Carolinians unite
to honor, denounced alike the infamy and
the perils of the African Slave Trade
throughout their public lives and shadow-'
ed forth in language which has since
proved prophetic, the mischief that it
must forever breed. It matters not
tlitit even now, tliouglitful men like Mr.
Pettigrew, of South Carolina, to whose
Legislative report upon the subject We
some days referred, shrink back from the
terrible future wifli which a reopened
Slave-Trade with Africa threatens them
selves, the society to which they belong,
and the institution of Slavery itself. If‘
the Administration shall succeed in dri-
ving the Lecompton Constitution through
Congress and over the ruins of the Dem-
ocratic Party, we must prepare to face
a new Southern outbreak in behalf of the
African Slave Trade. The lust of imme-
diate gain, reckless alike of morality and
of the morrow——the neccessity to desper-
ate politiciaiis of a passionate war cry,
and the general feverish disposition of
the South to forestall the iinagiuecl de-
signs of the North, are combining to awa-
ken a Soi_1_theri1 feeling in this direction,
which is already seeking expression
through organs as diverse in their ante-
cedents aiid their geseral character as
the destructive “New Orleans Delta,” in
Louisiana, and the ccnseiivative “ Rich-,
inond Wliigfl in Virginia. Louisiana de-
mands barbarian liordcs to feed her fa-
tal sugar mills ; Virginia, to crowd back
the invading “Yankees” from her \vast-
ed tobacco fields and her neglected for-
csts.
To the Northern sentiment upon this
subject we do not now address ourselves.
\Ve make no premature threats, and we
invite no premature e._\;ci_-tc:_;j,eii,ta; upon a
theme too‘ serious and too pregnant for
liasty spocoli or hasty action. But we
appeal to whatever of wisdom and of pa-
trioilsin may be found in the South, to
take note in time of the tendencies of
‘things in that portion of the Union, and
to oppose the fatal proclivity of f-.1nati-
cisin and cupidity. There are, surely,
