would remark, first, there are but three

animals that deign to touch it, viz : the

Tobacco-Worm, the Afi-icaii Rock-goat

The habit of smoking, cliewing and snuff-
ing, has become so general that it deserves
special notice. ‘ It has been opposed _by
physicians, condemned by Kings, ‘and pro-

; scribed by governments. Ministers of
the Gospel have raised their warning voi-
ces against it, and mouarclis have prohib-
ited its use under severe penalties. Shrewd
men in all iiatioiis where the use of 'l‘o-
bacco had become a habit with the peo-
ple, have foreseen and foretold the fatal
consequences which inevitably follow the
"habit, and have warred against. the threat.-
ened evil with all their cucrgies.

Park” today, my attention was suddenly
arrested by a ladof about _l2 years of
age, (D. specimen of “ Young Anierica,”_)
out at the knees, and out at the elbows,
bare-footed and almost bare-headed, cov-
ered with rags and so besmeared with
dirt, that it~would have , been a difficult
iiial.ter to have told‘/jhis oi-iguial‘ color,"
pulling for dear life at a roll of Tobacco,
the smoke issuing from ‘hi m0lll.ll' and ri-
sing in such “ graceful wreaths” ' about
his head. Turning my head a little I be-
held aboiit ten feet from him an old,’ dir-
ty looking apple woman, with the dirty
stump of a black pipe in her, moutli, arid
from that, too, the smoke rose in “ grace-
ful wreaths of blue” and passed away :' a
short distuiice from her, sat a green Irisli-

same " graceful wreaths of smoke” were

To sum it all up——tlie habit of using to-
bacco is one of the inostlsilly and foolish
habits a man can indulge in. It blunts
the sensibilities, endangers the health, de-
praves the moral character, imposes many
sore inconveniences upon its votai-i'es,.
makes war upon the piiritp of walls, floors
and clean linens, consuming small change
poisonslthe breath, destroys the beauty
of the teeth and "hastens their decay,4vex-
es the wife, and disgusts the ladies gene-
rally,‘ is :1 pest in the‘ house, and a iiiiis-
ance ont of it, makes a. man ashamed of
himself many tiiues and uneasy at others.
In short the filthy habit is productive of
mischief only, and that continually.

But says the confirmed chewer, siiiokcr
or siiufler, I know that what you say is
true, but what am I to do ‘.7 I confess
it is a dirty, filthy and a worsctliaii use-
less habit ; Iwonld give almost. nnytliiiig,
make almost any sacrifice to rid myself
of it. ' But I. have iiidnlged too long, it

shake it oil’. Nonseiise : you can if you
will. Arise in your streiigtli, assertyoiir

kins Couiity, Tennesee, realized this year
an income;of $20,000 from the labor of
his fifty negroes, or $400 to each negro.

Our readers will recollect that some
weeks since, we piiblislietl a detailed ac-
count of' the inysterions slip of paper cu-
closed in a bogle and picked up on the
coast of Fraiicc. ' The press geiierally,
viewed the iniitt.er as a cruel April fool
hoax, but upon a second reference to the
matter by the Paris papers we wci'e.led,,
in conncctioii with JUDGE Siimi, of ltliis.
town (the father of Legrand Smith, who‘
was the only person by tliat name on the
ill-fated steamer) to make a, critical ex-
amination of all the fiic‘s and circula-
stances in the case, from which we were
impressed with the. conviction that there
were very strong g’l‘0Illl(lS-fol‘ believing
that the scrip inight liavc emanated from
the inifortuniite voylagei' of the Pacific.-
Under this eonvictioii, we wrote to a
friend of ours in Paris, Dr. Evans, the

cessor to our own Dr. Brewster. By the
Africa, which reached New,York on Sun-
day we have Dr. Evans’ reply, .wliicli al-

versation mentioned the subject, in which
she becauic most intensely intercsted.——
The Emperor entering at the time, the
Empress said : “ My dear, Dr. Evans has
been telling, me of the possibility of ascer-
taining the fate of the Pacific.”--Tlieii re-
peating what I had said, regarding the
receipt of your letter, &c. - The - Empe-
ror, who is a man of noble heart, at once
entered into the details of the subject.-
Upon my relating it to him, he said it iii-
terested himexceediugly, and he would
immediately send for the scrip of paper.
He being a. very prompt man, and full of
kindly feeling, did so, and sent me, direc-

private stamp, the said paper,“ which I

acknowledged by all who have seen it, to

Bold Robbery.

Wilton was forced open diiriiig the ab-
