Palpitation.
One of the most rlistrcssiiig dliseasesthat
flesh is heir to. A pcisori in-.I.j«.-r-.t to it is lia-
ble to an %lIliif'ls' at any i'r.I.inerit, whether ly-
-ing, sitting or waifiing. its attack is sudden.
and ofltxiiitirnei-. without any pi emoiiitiou what-
ever, to ofteritimes without any appreciable
cause, and the relief‘ that can be utI'oi‘ded to
the poor patient during the paroxysm, is ex-
ceedingly iinsaf-isf'uctoi'y. for‘ but little can be
done that will in anyway give uiuch relief.
This, of all other diseases that I have at-
tempted to treat upon is the most important
not only from its being oftentimes of so diffi-
cnlt. removal, but from its being so exceeding-
ly liable to run into that structiiral organic
disease of the heart, for which there is no cure;
and would the space he allowed me, I should
make use of several columns in this paper,
that might throw all the light possible for me
to do, upon this all’ important disease, its
causes, indications of cure, treatment, &c.,
&c., in the hope that I might be the humble
means of awakening sufferers with this disease
to ii true sense of their perilous condition, and
stimulate them to lose no time in" adopting
some mode of treatment that would throw oft’
ihatcondition of the system whicli is the cause
of the fiiiicfioiial derangement.
There are two kinds of Palpitatioii viz:
That proceeding from organic disease of tI‘e
heart, or disease of its muscular siibstance,
and functional .or nervous palpitatinii. For
the former there is no cure; it is often pallia-
ted, butnever cured. For the latter. although
all treatment has been by some of the highest
authorities discarded because (as they say) so
little. if any success attends any remedial et-
fort that may be made. Yet a well directed
treatment is not only of most signal benefit,
but will cure, providing the grand cause of
the functional .dei'angeme,ii_t be well under-
stood, and a treatment intitnted with direct
reference to it. So far from discarding all
treatment it certainly should-receive the clo-
sest investigation and scrutiny, and every
possible exertion should be used towards its
removal lest its continuance should bring a-
bout tnat structural organic disease of the
heart which in nine cases cut of ten, is the
result of prolonged, iiricared for functional
disease. ~ _
Organic, or that incurable disease of the
musclar structure of the heart, is produced, as

the bear? " But before answering this question
let us see what are generally the accompany-
-irig symptoms. The pulse generally. are from
90 to 110-tongue clean, read and swollen, ir-
ritatiou and rediiess about the tonsiIs— bowels

ed fncc—tenderriess at the -pit of the stomach

the atmosphere, &c., &'c., giving the most
positive assiiiance of a highly congestive or-
gans. The cause,then, of nervous palpitation
or functional derangemeiit of the heart, hasfiis
origin in disease of the stomach and digestive
organs, the removal of which is of the first im-.
portaiice, for by so doing we cure the function-
al disease, and steer our patient clear of that
tei-i'ible.striictui'al organic disease of the heart
for which there is no cure, and but very little
relief from pnlliatives, And, bythe by,I will
here take. occasion, to remark. for the benefit
of sufferers, that as a general thing where
functionnl disease is stubborn and of difficult
removal, physicians are too apt to impiute
their ill success to the disease having passed
into the structural orauic disease, and so I
would say to all, be not dismayed, for your
physicians may be mistaken, and you may yet
be relieved by timely application to proper,
remedies.
the removal of the highly irritated and con-
gested condition of the digestive organs; and
if there is any disease requiring the most par-
ticular selection in remedies. this most certain-‘
ly is one, not only because valuable time may
be lost -iii the taking of improper remedies.
but the exhibition of remedies not consistent
with the true condition of the stomach, may
increase still more the disease, and hasten on
the structural organic disease. The remedy,
above all others for this disease, is ‘ A
