Now comes the question : If, from the closed
condition of the nioul.hs of the lactcals, it._ is
an impossibility for them to take up and ab-
sorb the chyle, and convey it into the circula-
tion, is it not also an impossibility for them
to take up or absorb Cod Liver Oil, or any
thing else‘! Most certainly. We do not dis-
cuss its remedial properties after it enters the
circnlation. f'or, in the state of“ the system
iinder consideration, it don't. get there, ornt
any rate. but a limited qnantity,and can’t get
there, for the vessels through which it has to
pass are closed up.

I may, in stating that all, every one. of
those vessels are closed, say that which is not
precisely true, f'or it may be possible, yes, and
probable. that the entire lining membrane of
the digestive organs is not in so congested a
state as to produce a uniform tumefaction or
swelling of that entire membrane; but that
the greater portion is in an inflamed and swol-
len state is true, from the fact of the patient
becoming lean and thin in flesh, which can
only be brought abnut by the closure of those
vessel.-rand the imperfect digestion that is
necessariiy the result of the inflamed condi-
tion of the mucus nicmbr-one of the digestive
organs.

From the above it will be seen. that, no
matter how much remedial virtues Cod Liver
Oil may possess, or how (to quote from above)
" under its use the chyle, which is the untri-
lious producyfdigestion. and taken up from
the ulinientary canal by the laicteals [only it
isn’t] becomes of -.1 healthy qii:ility"——so long
as it dues not enter the circulation (because
it cannot get through those closed up vessels).
it cannot. of course. be of any benefit to the
patient, for it passes 00' with the stool.

From the foregoing, it will be perceived
that the first step towards a succeslnl treat-
ment of the disease, consumption, is the re-
moval ot' its C.iL'si.:, viz.. diseased digestive
organs; this being done. the powers of the
systein will aeconiplish the, balance of the
work, providing the lungs be not too far can
aimed. A remedial agent must be employed
that will do_ away, with this congested and
swollencondition of the mucus niernbrane—
and this congested and swollen mucus mem-
liraiic iiiust be got rid of for Two reasonsv
fir-it. that imperfect digestion, and the manu-
fuetiire of chylc poor in qiiulity. which is the
iuevitable i-esiilt of ii diseased stom-.ich, may
he done away with; and second, that the
closed lacteals may be reslores_l to their natu-
ral coiidition, so as to admit the cliylc, and
pass it on into me circiilalioii. This being
done, not only will chyle of _e'ooc.l, healthy
qualit.y_bc maniif'ncl.ui'ed. but it will have frei-
