A Mother Weopmg {or a Sinful Daughter.
We stood a few moments in the May-
or’s office, a day or two since, when a well
dressed, good looking woman walked mod-
estly and diffidently in looking half be-
wildered at the crowd. and extremely sor-

Chronic Diarrhea.

I ll-IERE is certainly no disease requiring so
much nicely in frentiriciit as C-ironic Dior
rh(ca—-no disease that is so easily and quickly
reproduced f'roin the slightest of 2::iis.«.-.~=. and
no disease that has so often bafllcé the skill of
the wisest and most expel-iciiccil if-.I| of the
profession. Thousands there are: 5 this iiio-
ment that are siifferiiig f'roni it, an : have been
l'or months, and perhaps years; 1 co the re-
turned volunteer from the war of Mexico, or
advciiturers from the plains of C: lifornia, al-
though the disease was contracted .ong months
ago, yet. are still suffering from it, although a
long way removed from the pesflcntial at-
mosphere and other causes that pmcluced it.
Thousands there are. all throu ghee t the South,
Southwest and West, and in fact throughout
the whole United States, that are suffering
from it, discouraged and disheai tened, and
many lost to all hope of ever getting rid of it.
And why is this? why all this suffering and
discouragement? why so little success in its
treatment? and why so easily. reproduced
from the slightest cause, after it has once he-
come checked? From either a totrl disregard
or an entire ignorance of its exciting cause.
What is that cause? The food that 18 taken
into the stomach. Why? Because the digest-
ive organs are not in a fit condition to receive
and digest it; and why? Becuusi of the con-
geste and inflamed condition of‘ ti eir mucus
membrane.

The great majority of these long continued
chronic cases of Diarrhcea are pl'0(Ill( ed, either
by the food in a partly or wholly u".-digested
state passing from the stomach info ' be lower
bowels, and there producing, by its iresence,
an irritation of the mucus membrau. and the
consequent muscular contraction, or it is pro-
duced by the food after it has been nanuf'ac-
tured into chile; this latter, instead of being
taken up by the Iaclael vessels, is‘ passed on
into the lower bowels, and. like the undigested
food, produces an irritativc diarrluc .. In the
first instance, the stomach, from its inflamed
and congested condition, is unable to digest
the food that is being taken into it; and the
food not being digested or prepared so that it
can enter the circulation, must of necessity
be passed on through the bowels, and its pres-
ence there, aeting as any other foreign sub-
stance would, produces an irritation of the
mucus membrane with which it comes in con-
tact, and the consequences are premature and
the consequences are premature and debilita-
ting discharges f'rom the bowels by contractile
effort being excited into action.

In the second instance, where the food has
been digested and converted into chile, and
not being taken up by the lactael vessels, it
is passed on iuio the lower bowels, and by its
presence there produces the same disturbance
as that caused by the undigested f'ood. Why
is the chile not taken up by the lactael ves-
sels? It will be remembered that in the pre-
vious advertisements I described how the up-
per bowels, called the rlumlenum, had its side
pierced with innumerable small orifices. rc-
sembliug the sides of a nutmeg grater—tliat
these orifices were mouths of small vessels
called laclacls, and that the office of these
vessels was to take up the food after it had
been, by the stomach, converted into chile
and passed into the upper bowel. It will be
remembered that I said the lining membrane
of the stomach and bowels dipped into these
little orifices of the lactael vessels. and lined
them also. And it will also be remembered
that I said these little orifices were very small.
If all these points are remembered, it will
now be very easy to understand wily the food,
after being converted into chile, i‘: not taken
up and carried into the blood to nourish the
body, as it should lie. I have sai 1 that the
mucus membrane of the digestive organs was
in an inflamed and congestive coi diticu, and
every one knows that wherever t.iere is in-
flammation fhere is more or less swelling of
the part inflamed; and it is very «. asy to see
that there could not be much swell n,<_.-;- of that
lining membrane without closing up those
little orifices wliioh, opeii upon .-. So the
reason is now obv‘._ous why the c ile is not
taken up and passed into the circ ilation ' it
is because the vessels whose office it is to take
up the chile are closed, from the ; walling of
the mucus membrane of the Gigiesl ivc ogans,
into which they open, and the swelling is pro-
duced by congestion and inflammation of that
membrane? What has produced tl~isinfl-amed
state of that mucus membrane? Causes al-

lential atmosphere, bad water, ur wholesome
diet, stimulating food, spirituoiss liquors,
stimulating coiidimenls, pepper, mustard,

N-ow, will any one say that in the treatment

of Chronic Diarrhoea our remedial remedies

must be directed to the bowels 2 No. Where
then? 'l‘o the true seat of‘ the disease, of

these organs is the cause of the whole trouble,
and to this point must our reme-'.ial agents

What remedy will best fulfil their indica-
tions? Shall we use any of the preparations
now before the people, purporting to be
“sovereign remedies? No; for he most of
them are prepared with alcohol, or other
equally stimulating liquids. and the taking of
them would b,e adding fuel to the flame; they

would produce precisely that same condition

that we are striving to get rid of.

Shall we use Calomcl, which remedy, now-
vi-days, stands in highest estimation by the
learned of the profession? . No; for nothing
certainly can be more pernicious, not only
from its breaking down the plasticity of‘ the
blood, destroying the blood globules, the
strength and very life of man, thereby pre-
venting the inherent powers of the body to
readily repair the mischief inflicted, but by
producing. by contact, a direct irritation on
an already over-excited and highly irritated
membrane-—tlie mucus nicmbraue of the stom-
ach and bowelfi.

What remedy shall we use, then? So far
as my own experience extends, I unhesifafing-
ly say, that preparation bearing the name of
“BLISS’ DYSPEPTIC REMEDY.”2—a remedy
that I have used for years in my private prac-
tice, not only in this particular disease,but
all others arising from disease of the digestive
organs, and if‘ taken closely according to its
Mgompmlying direction, I am ]1(3.5il'ivL' that it
will not fail in effecting a cure, for I have
used it repeatedly in those very worst cases of
Chronic Dinri-lima, contracted in Mexico_ and
California, and I do not remember 11. single
instance in which it failed to effect a cure.
Its action will be found different in different
cases—in some cases, it will not only relieve
at once, but effect a, peumnuent cure alm_ost
