in debt to Europe. How came we so? The
answer is plain, southern Loco Focoism said
to the people of this county, “ you shall not

shall go to Europe and buy them ;” and so
southern Loco Focoism repealed the Tariff of
1842, and we have since then sent to Europe
all the gold of, California, and run in debt

We are glad to learn that the Bank of North
America, at Seymour, has not suspended, but
that it has money enough to protect its circu-
lation, which is only $20,000.

They boiled beautifully, and our “ house-

Chas. Comstock, of this town, left us a bas-
ketof the largest and most delicious peaches
we have experienced this season. Mr. C. has
been very successful in his cultivation of the
peach, securing a crop every year, and many
of them enormously large.
Wm. B. Nash, Esq., anxious to maintain ‘the
ancient glories of our poultry yard, has pre-
sented ns a pair‘ of beautiful’ white frizzled
fowls, in consequence of which we have been
in “ high feather ” ever since. '
We are under obligations to A. Chichester,
Esq., of South Norwalk, for large and luscious
specimens of his dwarf pear fruits. We are
the finances of the counti y are distracted.
Messrs. Meeker dz Olmstead send us a box
of some sort of patent lubricating gum or
grease, for carriage wheels, which promises
well. There is nothing like having a good
article to “grease the wheels with,” these
hard times, and the donation is very pccept‘
able : but, with no disrespect to the enterpris-
A ing merchants, we must suggest to our delin-
quent patrons that they could "send in” a
certain article that would lubricate our wheels
most charmingly, just at this particular time.

a large and well regulated establishment,

ments of Wages to those employed by this
Company will be made quarterly, and the
next pay day will be Saturday, Decem-
ber the 19th. Advances, as usual, will

It is proper to state that the plan of
payment now adopted, mainly grows‘ out
of the very mistaken practice of deman-
ding of thebanks specie for the bills paid
out by us. The banks. in view of this
constant annoyance, very naturally pre-
fer to retain their bills in their own vaults,
to issuing them for payment to our work-

One of the lagest muaufacturing establish-
ments in New. Haven, guarantee every bill
paid out by them, and then give notice to their
einploynasthat any one demanding specie of
the city Banks during the present crisis, will
be discharged. The same annoiicement has
been made at least in one establishment in
Norwalk, and much can be done by employers
and private i ndividuals, towards relieving the
pressure, and assisting the banks in their ef-
forts to assist in turn the whole Country.
Teachers Institute.
The Teachers Institute of Fairlield County,
will be held- in New Canaan, commencing
Oct. 26th. It is hoped that every teacher
who fells an interest iii the cause of education
will not fail to attend.

The Skies Brighten.
All “ runs’? upon the Connecticut Banks
seem to have ceased. Only about $2,500 in
coin has been drawn from the Fairtield County
-Bank since the panic began, and that almost
entirely by the more ignorant of our foreign
population. Two or three up-country farmers
were seized with the panic, and one demanded
specie and got $200'in 10 cent pieces, and the
others were so frightened for fear their houses
would be broken" open and they robbed, that
on Friday and Saturday they brought it
back and asked for bills again! All dis-
position to run the Bank seems to have ended.
