ed to perform, is the hypocriteéaioighing an-
ti-slavery and free-labor, while aiming to
build up the tottering fprtunes of the wast
Pro-Slavery Adlninistraiou ivitb which the
coiliitry has yet been cursed. The ultimate
fate of such a journal is easy to be foreseen-

four drills each day occupying some eight
hours each day, alld besides these the
formal parades, guard mounting and
reviews were practiced, so that the men
had an opportunity to acquailit themselves
with tlieroiitiiie of Camp duty. Nearly
all the officers complied with the law and
appeared in the uniform of privates.
One of the pleasantest incidents of the
encampment says the New Haven Jaimi-
al and Courier was the presentation of a
magnificent sword to Major General Gily-
er, the Commandant of the Divisioli. It
was an impromptu affair, got up to show
him how universally he was esteemed
throughout the State, to testify an appre-
ciation of his services in establishing the
military system adopted in 1854, and pre-
venting any deviations fronl it, and to
show him that it was the unanimous wish
of the Division that he should continue in
its command.
The proposition was started late on
Thursday, and so rapid was the response
that a mucll larger sum o£‘money than
was contemplated was at once raised,
and Col. S. A. Cooley was dispatched to
the Amos’ Manufacturing Company at _
Chicopee. He returned the same night,
with a beautiful sword, worth one liuii-
drcd dollars, which was quietly deposited
at the Head Quarters of the 2d Regi-
ment.
The sword is of the pattern proscribed
for general officers. - The pominel is a
golded acorn ; the gripe is solid silver ; the
guard is the shield of the United States
and an eagle strangling a serpent ; the
crossbar of the hilt ornamented at each
end by a topaz. The blade is straight
and two-edged, beautifully chased with
appropriate devices, as is the scabbared
The latter is of steal, trebly gilt.
On Friday lioou, when most of the
officers were dining at the sutler’s tout,
the othoromcers, being notified of the in-
tended ceremonies, made their appearance
at the tent, accompanied by the Middle-
town Cornet Band.

ment to present it to you in their name,

compliment, no hollow flattery in which
the heart has no part; neither is it hom-
age paid to your rank ; but it is a gen-
uine, sincere, unaffected testimonial of
our regard for Thomas Gilyer as a man.
You, Sir, have many claims upon our
regard. We recollect that you were one
of the conlmittce appointed by Governor
Seymour in 1853, to revise the Militia
laws of the State, and that to your labors
and the labors of the other distinguished
military nieu who were members of that
committee, nearly all that is valuable. in
our present system is due, and we feel
that if you had no other claim upon our
gratitude, this sword would be but a poor
acknow‘edgeluent of our obligation to
you, But it is not for this alone that we
offer it to you ; it is for the kindness,
courtesy and affability which has marked
and still "m-irks all your intercourse with
us ; for the care and consideration of our
comfort and welfare which you have dis-
played on those occasons when you have
been our immediate cammader, and for
th eldom erring judgment and failing
rec tude intention with which you have
administered the duties of your office.
And now, in the name of my comrades,
permit me to express the hope that for
many years to come, you may continue
to perform those duties, satisfied as we
are, that whether we be called to contri-
bute our humble efforts to the defence of
our country, we can have no better lead-
er and chief than yourself.
May you, sir, long continue to enojoy
the smiles of Heaven, ill every relation,
wllether public or private. May your
life long be spared to yourself and t) us,
and when you shall approach “ that un-
discovered couutry from whose bourne no
traveller 'returns,” when to you, as to all

Col. Terry’s address was followed by the
hearty applause of the officers present,
and the Band struck up “ Hail to the

Gen. Guyer wasinuch affected at the
unexpected token of heartfelt esteem, and
warmly expressed. his appreciation of the
compliment and the feelings of affection
which prompted it.
