THE New ‘Jersey Fertilizer Company is

Prof. Cook in his Annual Report to the
Legislature of New Jersey say: : “ The value
of these marls is best seen in the rich and
highly cuitivateddistrict which has been im-
proved, almost made, by‘ their use, but it
may be interesting to examine -the causes of
their great value in Agriculture, and tocom
pare them with other fertilizers. For exam-
ple, the potash alone may be taken at an av-
erage of five per cent. of the whole weight of
the Mirl, a bushel when dry weighing eighty
pounds. and in the proportion mentioned
would contain t'our pounds of .potash, this is
nearly as much as there is in a bushel of un-
leached wood ashes.” And again, it is prob-
able that the great value of the Marl is to be
found in the-fact that it ‘contain: nearly all
the substances necessary to make up the ash
of ‘our common cultivated plants.
