substitute.
Prof. Cook in his Annual Report to the
Legislature of New Jersey says : “ The value
of these mnrls is best seen in the rich and
-highly cultivateddistrict which has been im-
proved, almost made, by their use, but it
may be interesting to examine the causes of
their great value in Agriculture, and to com
pare them with other fertilizers. For exam-
ple, the potash alone may be taken at an av-
erage of five per cent. of the whole weight of
the M iii, a bushel when dry weighing! eightv
pounds. and in the proportion mentioned
would contain four pounds of potash. this is
nearly as much as there is in a bushel of un-
leuched wood ashes.” And again, it is prob-
able that the great value of the Marl is to be
found in the fact that it containslcarly all
the substances necessary tp make up the ash
