patliizes with him, and thinks it hard that
a man should work without pay; but by
the highest authority in the country. he
is debarred from appearing in our courts
of justice, not being a citizen, and he has

If slaves are propety, and the consti-
tution was designed ‘to uphold slavery,
tlien what can hinder any of us from hold-
ing slaves ? The courts have just the
same right to decide that a man held a
slave in Connecticut has_ no right ‘toap
peal to them for liberty, not being a citizen,
as in the Dred Scott case. “
By common law and common - sense,
the decision of Judge Tauey and his slve-
holding associates, can have no binding
force ; for being slaveholders. and there-
fore interested parties, they are not com-
petent to sit in such a case ; and further-
more, all the decisions of United States
and State Courts, down to this Dred
Scott case, havebeen uniformly in favor
of the freedom of a slave taken voluntari-
ly by his master into a free State. '

The election of Bissell, the Republican,
to the governatorial chair in this State
has already proved ablessing to the State.
and may, quite probably, prove ablessing
to the whole country ere long. He has
voted a bill to divide up the State anew
into districts for representatives and ‘son-
ators—a bill concocted by democrats for .
party purposes, and passed by democratic
majorities in both branches of the legisla-
ture. The present system is manifestly
and grossly unfair, but that was even more
boldly unjust ‘ Theobject of. this demo-
cratic move, was to save Arnold Douglas.-
He comes before thenext legislature for:
re-election, and by their corrupt“ manage-
ment his party friends hoped to aveftl
from his head the wrath of the_peopl’ej'—‘-'
by defeating the popular will, they hoped ‘
to return him to Congress. All th'anks'to‘

by his justice and firmness he has aver-

fun by a communication in regard vtothe
claim of the employees of the House for

Room of the Committee of Ways and

26th 1842——there does not appear in the
Statutes at Large a public law approved
on that day by the 1’res'ident_” Next

find a law that contains any language
